There must be brake shoe adjusters, two different designs depending on whether you have the 9" or the 10" brakes on your rear axle. If these were adjusted for the worn shoes, fitting the new ones will make it impossible to fit the brake drums over them. You will need to back off the adjusters until the drum slides in easily, and then adjust the shoes.

To adjust, you turn the wheel by hand while tightening the adjustment (bringing the shoes closer to the drum) until the wheel locks. Then back off the adjustment until the wheel is just free to turn again (with no significant drag). After 1000 miles or so, re-check adjustment as the shoes will have bedded in.

Haynes and GM manuals both have diagrams, but I don't have electronic versions of either at the moment as I'm on the road. Depending on which size brakes you have, the adjusters work very differently.

Brake drums.

Hi yipikiaye,

It depends what year your CF is but as far up as 81 there was a manual adjuster at the bottom of the back plate.
These were often seized and had to be removed and freed off, but make sure you handbrake cables ar fully off and free moving.
There will be be a ware ridge around the inner edge of the drum, buffing that off will be a great help to refitting.
And check that the wheel cylinders are not seized half out by pushing them back by hand.

Doug.

If the rear brakes look like this with a fixed abutment for the shoes at the bottom -

then the auto-adjuster on the back of the forwards (leading) shoe will need setting to minimum AND the handbrake cable adjuster will need slackening off before the drum can be installed.

Look for a hole in the brake backplate at about the same level as the adjuster cross bar & behind where the adjuster cam & pawl sit.

Using a screwdriver through the hole, push the pawl lever in the direction of the red arrow -

If the adjuster cam isn't seized on its pivot & the wheel cylinder pistons move freely then the top pull-off spring should cause the adjuster to close up to minimum.
