STP

I don't know how many Beddy owners out there use STP or Wynns oil additive, but I have been converted to using this stuff from an experience a long time ago and it may just have saved my engine a few months ago....

When I was a lot younger I had a Hillman Minx and on a trip down the (new M3) there was an unmistakable rumble of a big end on its way out (in those days a big end problem was common place with old secondhand cars), anyway, I checked the oil..OK, it hadn't boiled over, it was just knackered. There was no way my meager fortune could afford a tow off the motorway so I very gently drove on for the next exit.

By the time I got off of the exit, I was in 2nd gear, barely touching the throttle, I eventually coasted into a garage.

Out of desperation I put a can of STP in the oil and almost immediately the rumble stopped. So I turned for home and drove gently home for 40 miles or so but not on the motorway again as I couldn't chance a breakdown in it.

Believe it or not, that car went on for another year of normal and motorway driving and even when I sold it, there was still no signs of the noise again.

Ever since then, whenever I do an oil change in an old car, I always use STP Which now brings me on to my Bedford CF.

My head gasket decided to go (big time) as my wife, myself and the dog were coming back from a short 5 days away in Dorset. It was so quick to go that within from driving perfectly to blowing out huge plumes of steam was only a few minutes. It was almost dark and we were 100 miles from home.....imagine the frustration. Anyway we calmly sat in the back of the motorhome made a cup of tea and weighed up our options.

The solution we came up with was to try and make it to my brother-in-laws' house which according to the sat-nav was 4 1/2 miles away. So I poured a pint of oil from my emergency supplies into the (by now), milky custard and topped up the radiator with a vast amount of water which was in plentiful supply in the main tank.

We set off very gently, leaving more steam behind us than Fred Dibners' traction engine and after stopping a further two times to fill the radiator, we eventually arrived at the brother-in-laws house.

The next day I made all the arrangements for the gasket set, a viscous spanner and other parts to come to me and over the next three days whilst parked outside his house, did the job.

Now when I drained the oil, the first two pints were clear water followed by the usual custard but as soon as I started the old girl up, she just purred and has had no adverse effects at all. So could it be that the CF engine is so good and rugged that even running on water and custard for 4 1/2 miles it can take it in its stride?, or could it have been the STP already in the system still coating the bearing surfaces? or may be a bit of each?.

I will continue to use STP but just wondered what consensus of opinion was among other Beddy folk?

STP.

Hi Old Boy,

This is another old boy just letting you know that I also use STP and have done on a number of engine's over the years, and is does what it says on the tin and then some more.
Its too good to be in engine oil so they sell it as an additive!

Doug.
