Radiator burst!

1987 CF2 2.0 petrol (230 I think?)

Its the season of the witch for my van.

Went for a run up to Peas Pottage tonight. Its really freezing here, don't know about anywhere else, anyway I parked up, went in, had a coffee, came out and there's a big splash-patch of wet on the ground under the front bumper. No drips though. Almost pitch black in the car park but I had a torch so checked it out... loads of red water all over the front bumper and behind the grill.

Unscrewed the rad cap to see if any obvious leaks started and sure enough, on the right hand side near the bottom it was peeing out. Topped up with water, drove home at a constant 65 to keep the cold air coming and the revs quite low in overdrive, and made it home. Made it home fine actually. One the cap was tightened the leak slowed right down and the temperature never got above 1/4 of the way all the way. Hell of a lot of steam pumping out when I was manouvering her into a parking spot outside the house though.

So now I need a new radiator. I've never really felt I trust repaired rads. Is there absolutely nothing out there, like for a Frontera maybe, or something else, that can be made to fit a CF2.

I'm happy to replace the entire radiator and fan and have the van altered to accomodate. Is that possible or do I have to try and seal up this rusty decrepit old piece of tin who's cooling meshes are pretty much rusted into oblivion?

A re-core will be like new; all that's re-used are the top & bottom tanks and the mounting brackets.

Yellow Pages for your local radiator specialist; expect about £100 for a 2-row re-core.

Okeedokee, I've clearly got the wrong idea about recores. I had mentally filed next to retread tyres, and likely to burst again.

Thanks for the info as usual folks!

Ive heard about a trick dropping a raw egg into the rad as an emergency, but I imagine it causes other issues afterwards... anyone tried it?

Egg white is a last resort dodge when there's nothing else available.

Very good at blocking radiator core tubes if the coolant level drops below the tops of the tubes before the egg cooks...

Best external temp repair.

Hi to all,

My best temp repair just to get me home was about five craft cheese slices melted into the leaking area while the radiator was still hot, done the trick I made it home.

Hi Doug, thanks very much for the offer... I've actually got a recored CF2 rad coming from Mr Bailey, who happened to have one sat on his shelf.

Much obliged to you for the offer though.

Tim

Recored.

Hi Spookytim,

Glad to hear you are sorted out, but just in case by a pack of craft cheese slices I don't know when they are made from but they are good for water leaks.

Doug.

Just in case you ever need one again, the chaps in Newhaven pick up and drop off a recored rad for £125.

Good to know for next time Alena, but on this occasion, I have to say hats off to Mr Bailey. I called him Tuesday, he despatched the replacement rad on Wednesday, it got here this morning and looked like a brand new rad (ie it wasn't 'just' recored, it was recored, thoroughly cleaned up, and re-sprayed in heat-resistant protective black paint to look as good as new).

The cost was £119, the delivery from Leeds to Hove plus return (to him) of my old busted rad was £20ish, it arrived at 9:00am, I was back in the warm munching toast by 10.00am with it all fitted and ready to drive... so I am a happy Bedford owner.

(Plus I got a nice Bedford window sticker with my ABC receipt!)

Just have to wait and see what goes wrong next I guess. I think this harsh winter is going to expose a few failing parts. Friends of mine who are into various old style vehicles are also reporting a rash of failed rads, split pipes, and seizing engines. Its going to get expensive before it gets warmer I think.
