1983 CF 250 gearbox

Hi,

I have a manual 1983 Cf 250, I was driving it to its MOT on friday when it got stuck in 3rd gear at the dartford crossing (embaressing) and it wont come out. Firstly does anyone have any suggestions for what might be causing this.

Secondly; I have taken the gear box off (haven't looked inside it yet) and the gearbox is one from a scrapped Vauxhall Victor FD 1600, I know this cos it is written on the box. Can anyone tell me what gear box is supposed to be on the van? and any suggestions of where I can get a replacement one?

One of the pevious owners has moved the gearstick so that the different box could be installed, the linkage is crap as a result. On the current gear box the selector mechanism and speedo cable are on the drivers side.

Looking in the haynes manual it looks to me like the van should have a GM 4 speed box on it?

If possible I'd like to get the box (and gear stick) that is supposed to be on the van.

Thanks

Alex

If you can't shift out of 3rd gear with the engine not running then it could be the external linkage (e.g. loose or worn locating screw on the selector cross shaft where it pokes from the side of the gearbox) or wonky selector bits inside the gearbox or even a broken synchro sleeve or hub. Sudden failure might just be just a broken spring pin in the selector fork or on the cross shaft.

Correct gearbox for a CF250 with a Vauxhall OHC slant engine is the 4-speed Vauxhall type with a gear lever turret on the left side of the main casing. Part number 8821084 is cast on left side of main casing above the oil level/filler plug.

GM gearbox (Opel type) usually goes with the diesel engine and is shorter in length so will need a longer propellor shaft to go with it.

GM 'Fillipino' single rail gearbox (CF2) only fits Opel engines.

Gearbox.

Hi alexson,

Does your gearbox have a threaded hex nut holding in the gearstick or is it held in by a spring clip.

Doug.
