It depends ...

If it's a claim against the other driver then who is deciding cost of repair and the value of the van? That's market value, not what you've insured it for.

Doesn't count: that was then.

If the van has been improved since purchase then the market value now - what it would cost to replace it with something similar - will be more.

E.g., coachbuilt alloy camper on a short wheelbase chassis in average condition can be worth about £2000 with no improvements.

Buying the van back as salvage if it's written off can bring problems like re-insuring after the van is back on the road.

Another way is to obtain an independent assessment of market value and likely repair costs then argue the toss with the insurers over a cash settlement in lieu of repairs with a view to getting the van repaired yourself, maybe for less than the insurer's repairer's estimate, maybe not.

This is the main reson for getting an agreed value on any classic vehicle, in case of an accident or theft you get the agreed value less any access on the policy, I have an agreed value on mine at £4500 with a £100 access.

If your insurance has written it off as uneconomical repair, then ask if you can buy it back, repair, get a VIC test done, without it won`t be insured, and you should be able to insure it again,my mate had his jimny wrote off,got it back, repaired it,VIC tested, and same insurers covered it again, although if he claims again the value will probably be much less as its been paid out on before,VIC-vehicle identification check-basically VOSA check to make sure its the same vehicle and not cloned,if its unrecorded then you don`t need to do this.

The VIC takes around 20 minutes to complete and involves comparing the details on the DVLA vehicle record against the car presented. The VIC is a check of identity, it doesn’t look at the quality of the repair or confirm roadworthiness. If you have any concerns regarding these aspects, you should seek the opinion of an independent expert.

cost is £41.00.

You should be able to find address of local vosa test station,

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Dl1/Directories/UsefulContactsByCategory/MotoringContacts/DG_069953

-it lists all vic test stations in uk.
