Engine cleaning

Prior to a gasket replacement i wanted to give the engine a bit of a clean.. (not least so i can see if it's fixed the leak) lisa is keen to steam clean it at some point (which may or may not be a good idea), but for now i've been looking at the various chemicals in halfrauds.

any recomendations ?
ones to avoid given the age of the engine & auxilliaries ?
its parked on gravel so no tarmac to worry about.

was looking at the "gunk" one, and maybe the green eco friendly one on the basis it's probably gentlest ?

any ideas welcome, ed.

Pressure washer usually is enough to clean down for tracing leaks & avoids risk of damage to rubber components by solvent cleaning.

Warm engine better than cold when cleaning but allow exhaust manifold to cool down to avoid risk of cracking.

Delco distributor tends to collect water: after cleaning, detach cap to allow water to evaporate.

Hi I am a firm believer of "gunk" for cleaning engines even back in the 70s
