Problem changing gear

Hi
We finally got Harry serviced and went away in him over the bank holiday. the engine is running brilliantly and it was great to finally drive him. However, the gears were a nightmare on the way home. Really hard to get in to gear, particularly first. My Dad drove him to get MOTd today and said he found it really stiff too, particularly to get in to 3rd. He failed the MOT on brake issues as he's pulling to the left and a bit of welding needed somewhere (my Dad was a bit vague!) and is booked in to get that work done on Tuesday. But, has anyone got any suggestions of what to do about the gears? Harry is a 1972 Beford CF.
Many thanks as always. One day he'll be up and running and we'll use him more and get out to a meet up!
Wendy

Stiff gears.

Hi Wendy and Paul,

First of all check the oil level in the gearbox is up to the level plug hole.
Next take off the gearchange turret side plate and make sure there is grease inside if not slap a handfull of light grease into it and refit the side plate.
Then check the adjustment on the clutch cable, too much free play there would make changeing gear difficult.

Thanks Doug. We haven't been brave enough to try and do anything ourselves to Harry, but maybe we'll be brave and try and take a look and check these things. Hopefully what you describe will be in the Haynes Manual. )

Gearchange.

Hi Wendy and Paul,

Yes any workshop manual will show how to do these basic checks, the crossshaft and fork in the gearchange turret must have plenty of lube because they are not part of the main box casing which is full to level plug with EP80 gearoil.
So without grease these moving parts will seize up making selection of gears difficult, if these checks do not solve the problem then there maybe selector problems inside the main gearbox due to age mileage or low oil level.

Doug.
