spluttering on pulling away, and poor starter

Yet more problems with our Trailblazer - I think again due to crud in the fuel, despite the TWO fuel filters.

She is a bit of a pig to start when cold, but not too bad on full choke. Idles nicely when warm, very steady. Mixture screw half turn out from best idle.

As she warms up, she becomes harder and harder to get away from a standing start - engine splutters, and you have to slip the clutch to get going. Once at higher revs she tuns fine. Warm starting is a real pain if she has been running for more than 10min or so.

I suspect a blocked starter and intermediate jet. Accelerator pump works OK, and carbs are getting fuel from the pump. Valve clearances were recently set.

Electronic ignition fitted, and electric fuel pump.

Any other ideas welcome. Timing has been fiddled with too, so maybe???

You might have answered the question already ...

Timing ought to be right anyway before tinkering with the carburettor.

Aha, but it has been doing this for a while now, getting progressively worse, prior to me fiddling with the timing (which I suspect may have been slightly out anyway...

Just out of interest, would timing advanced or timing retarded be the more likely cause of these symptoms? I don't trust my timing light, but I don't know anyone who I can borrow one off. I assumed the timing was slightly retarded due to lack of power,so I advanced it a few degrees.

How long since the valve clearances were adjusted?

If cylinder head doesn't have hard valve seats then setting clearances on tight side can cause hot starting problems and lack of power starting from rest.

Cylinder compression check, engine hot, might be a good idea to narrow things down.

If figures are low then try setting clearances + 1 click on exhaust valves.

If figures are ok then can look elsewhere, e.g. intake air leak.

Got it sorted in the end - I have a constant battle with debris from the tank, despite cleaning it twice. Turned out both the compensator and the idle jet were almost completely blocked, and this is WITH two fuel filters.

i also removed my Accuspark ignition and went back to the points, and she now runs much better! I think the module gets too hot as it is inside the dizzy and gets no cooling. I imagine a Luminition unit or similar would have a much easier life outside and in some air flow. She is now returning about 23mpg on a run which I am happy with, and had no issues on a 250 miles run this weekend.

Oh, but just to add that I did the valve clearances about 2000km ago, so they weren't at the top of the list, or else with the warm starting issues I'd have suspected something like that. I use a flashlube system.

The stronger spark and clean jets has really improved things.

Splittering.

Hi Philbut,

I have had this problem even up until last weekend and I know that everything has been set up spot on from timing to valve gaps to plug gaps and fuel mixture and air intake.
What I have found is that when I use a lead additive the problem is much less which leads me think that some cheap fuels are just too cheap, bio fuels are a big no no because of the water content.
I know some friends who have had to come off bio diesel on their Toyota four by four because the water content build up in the system.

Doug.

I tend to run on 95, but from Shell / BP/ etc rather than super market stuff. In my case, I am pretty sure the rubbish is coming out of the tank, rather than the fuel it self. I do run a flashlube system, although I have yet to get it metering the fluid at quite the right rate.
