Engine cut out

Hi,

I'm getting intermittent engine cut out. I initially thought that i had problems with the starter motor and bought a new one only to find that the one on their is already new.

After it cuts out it sometimes has trouble starting up again - hence the starter but now I know it's def related to these mysterious cut outs.

It can do it after I first start it up but also in the middle of a journey. The engine just immediately looses power and then I'm sat with the battery light on with a 50/50 chance of starting her up first time. Although! sometimes it will begin to die and then I can give it gas and it will recover!?

It's just had a full service inc engine/fuel line flush and new filter.

Thanks,

N

What do you mean by 'immediately'?

Also, does the alternator warning lamp light at exactly the same time as the engine cuts out, or does it light after the engine comes to a stop?

Cut out.

Hi nwbt77,

Certainly sounds like fuel starvation or contamination, what did they flush out the fuel system with, did they change the carb settings and leave the mixture too lean.
When you feel a loss of power does giving it some choke help, you will have to recheck plug and points gaps and have a look at that new filter it may show blobs of water.

Doug.

Thanks for getting back so quick - this forum is a lifesaver... or van-saver or something.

Well all the electrics stay on - it's just as if the accelerator isn't working and then the revs drop until it stalls. Even if I go to neutral.

As for the alternator warning lamp - It's only when the engine hits zero revs the lamp comes on.

When I start the engine and it runs - the lamp sometimes comes on for around 30 - 60 seconds. Is this normal?

Not too sure - this problem was there before the service... When it runs, which is 80% of the time, it's running a bit smoother with more power than before the service.

And the choke can help yes - sometimes I can just rescue it with the accelerator by throwing it in a lower gear or putting it in neutral and giving it gas. Although this doesn't work very often.

Fuel starvation more likely from the description.

This can be due to debris or water globules in the carburettor float chamber, choked fuel filter, failing fuel pump, blocked fuel line or a combination.

Also, if the engine tends to cut out when its speed is low to start with (idle speed or a bit above) then the idle jet may be blocked.

This may take a bit of to and fro to narrow things down ...

Year of van and engine size?

Which carburettor is installed?

Choice of Weber or Zenith.

Weber choke spindle is at right angles to the throttle spindle with the choke cable on the right of the carburettor when viewed from the front.

Zenith choke spindle is parallel to the throttle spindle with the choke cable above the accelerator cable on the back of the carburettor when viewed from the front.

Is there a fuel line filter visible anywhere?

Meanwhile, the alternator warning lamp taking a while to go out after starting may not be a problem: some Delco units with internal swamp resistor can take their time to wake up.
