Advice on fuel filters needed please

I currently run two plastic paper element fuel filters in between my electric fuel pump and the carb. Yesterday on the way back from Wales she ground to a halt on the M4. Typical fuel starvation symptoms,so I cleaned out the float bowl and put a new filter on. 10 miles down the road I get the same. To cut a long story short, 4 carb rebuilds later I called the recovery truck.

The crap in the float bowl was black, and looked far too big to fit through the 30 micron fuel filter,so obviously the filter had allowed it through. It was on both sides of the filter,so definitely originated tank side.

I am off to France next Thursday and need to get this sorted. I will drain and flush the tank (again) but can someone recommend a fuel filter that will not allow this junk through. The plastic see through ones are obviously not upto the job.

Thanks
Phil

Not trying to be pedantic mate,But if the filters are getting choked after you have cleaned the tank then surely the problem must be in the lines or the tank itself.honestly not trying to find fault,i have had this problem with diesel lines and nearly went mad(well madder than normal lol)If you know the lines are clear and the fuel is fresh then microns dont come into it unless A,the lines are perished and breaking up or the tank is passing dirt up the line. You have already flushed the tank so maybe the lines are breaking up inside?just a thought mate.you could run with a 10 micron and it would choke even quicker,50 would just let more stuff through.

Fresh fuel lines are on the to-do list in fact. I don't mind changing the filter often, thats no bother. I'd prefer a blocked filter than a blocked carb jet. The thing is that the filter isn't blocking up, it's just not stopping the large particles either? I will do the lines before I go, but I'd still like to have a reliable filter as a last defence against that horrible spluttering that means you are about to roll to a halt...

I run one of these in the van
http://www.oilybits.com/filters/elements-complete-with-housings/5-inch-polypropylene-filter-for-water-wvo-or-bio-diesel/prod_484.html

with a 50 micron element then it goes through the regular fuel filter. Its easy to change on the road and you can see whats in there too. I am running veg oil through it so I don't know how it will handle petrol.

I've just had the tank out of the van to fix a leak (some muppet had tried to fix it with....wait for it.....just a little longer......body filler! I kid you not). Any way I ran new copper lines for the fuel supply & added a return for diesel conversion. I'd recommend against it. I thought I could do a nice tidy job as I have a pipe bender etc but getting the tool in place was nigh on impossible & it looks a bit pant's. Next time I'll run flexi hoses.

It needs the final "l" knocking off it.

Good web site there. They have quite a nice range of filter options. I was considering a Filter King pressure reg and filter all in one, but they come up quite expensive.

Will finish draining the tank down tonight and whip it out. I have a good local motor factors who should be able to supply some fuel line.
