A return to ford.

Hi to all,

Having worked on all types of gearboxes over the years I was pleased when I was offered the chance to go back to ford type nines.
Thanks to a friend and member of this club who allowed me to strip down and check over a type nine five speed box he just happened to have tucked away in his kitchen.
The plan being to sometime in the future convert my Bedford cf to a type nine gearbox mated up to a 2 ltr pinto ford engine, all measurements have been checked and it is very do-able.

Doug.

Type Nine box.

Hi to all,

Thanks to Rae Waters I have been able to refresh my memory of the ford gearbox, and the layout has not really changed from the older four speed ones I worked on in the past.
Apart that is from the added fifth gear which they have done in the same way as most others have, by adding a bit more casing a mainshaft and layshaft gear and a sicro hub.
They have kept the very simple single rail selector set up that ford have always used for this very reliable gearbox.
The clever part is in the side mounted gearstick adaptor and lid which allows the gears to be selected, and the box to be fitted to vans like the Transit and Bedford CF.
Which means that the tailshaft gearstick location can be blanked off, but this type box is a bit heavier than the Bedford not just because of the extra gears but also the casing weight.
The box I have striped and checked for Rae showed signs of having been striped before where the layshaft had not been located correctly into the rear alloy casing, this allowed the gears on that shaft to float forward and cause some tooth chipping.
But for age and milage the box is still in a very serviceable state with a ware level that you would expect to find.
This gearbox mated up to a Ford Pinto 2.lt. engine would be a very good convertion in a Bedford CF and give a higher MPG figure, due to the shortage of spares for the CF gearbox and the lack of a five speed Bedford box.

Doug.

Hello Doug,
Excellent news.
Now I have one more question, you know we have a heavy duty Laycock overdrive unit that came off a four speed Transit gearbox. I have the adaptor plate that the overdrive is bolted onto the type 9 gearbox, is there any way we can put these two together and have a five speed with an overdrive; now that would be interesting?

Type Nine box.

Hi Rae and Ann,

Well we now know that the adaptor plate only fits the four speed box, dam shame but thanks for the chance to use it to up grade my old campervan to a type nine box.
