Seating for passengers

Hello, I'm new to campervan ownership and have just bought a 1973 CF (5 berth CI conversion) on eBay.

Unfortunately I didn't do my homework re passengers and have a bit of a problem - we have two kids, aged 6 and 9, and the van has no provision for passengers in the rear. It has two standard car seats in the cab, and two side-facing benches in the rear which fold together to make the double bed.

Does anyone have any experience of retro-fitting seats and belts to meet legal and safety requirements, to carry passengers in the back?

Hello mate, welcome to the club. There are no legal requirements for fitting seatbelts because of the age of your van.The safety factor is another matter of course.
I would advise against fitting them to the side facing seats as full belts could do more damage in an accident.Lap belts might be better but don't quote me on that! You could possibly fit full belts if your kids faced forward with their feet up on the bench seat. They would have to be fitted to the metal structure of the van though.(I think)
Your best bet would be to consult your mot station first & then go from there.

Depending on your conversion, many of the CI campers have the bench seat that can be reconfigured to a forward facing seat, should you want to fit a 3 point harness. the front edgeof the bench folds inwards, and then the rear seat lifts up - you then slide the whole seat rearwards to form the seat and back of the chair.

What is your conversion called (Bedouin, Trailblaze etc)?

Thanks for the replies guys, very helpful. I'm collecting the van tomorrow so will have a word with the seller and see if he has any advice. I really should have checked this before buying, but I'm sure it's not an insurmountable issue

here's a pic of the interior - looks like the benches that make up the bed are fixed:

Hi Steve welcome the the club. Side facing seat are not allowed by law to have Seatbelts. but all children must wear seatbelts. I am thinking off putting a double seat in the front for my van to over come this problem.

I've just had a look at the direct.gov.uk web site section on seat belts which states:-

'If your vehicle has no seat belts

You can't carry any children under three years old in vehicles without seatbelts, like classic cars. If you're travelling with children over three years old, they must only sit in the back seats.'

Which to me means kids over 3 in back unbelted is legal.

Have a look at one of my old thread - I have fitted double cab seats and lap belts. May be you can re-arrange one of your seats in the rear so allow for a forward facing lapbelt.

Apologies for the delay in replying, but thanks for all the useful advice. We've decided to get a carpenter in to turn the side facing seats to front & rear facing. We'll fit seat belts for the rear facing seats. It'll cost a few quid but with 2 youngsters, and another on the way, we need to be totally safe & legal.

Thanks again!

Bedford CF rear seatbelts/interior adjustment

Hi all. I've seen a few forum posts on altering the interior of an autosleeper to fit rear seatbelts. I've got a 1975 CF1, with the two side facing bench seats. I noticed a few people had changed the interior to make the seats face forwards? Just wondering if anyone has any pic of a completed one, any guide on what to do and whether you can still use it has a bed when it's been done? Thanks in advance for any assistance on this! Matt

This one shows the forward facing configuration.
There's a hinged panel that folds out to form the bed base.
