ZF 5 speed on a 1.8 slant - will it work?
I have a full setup for a ZF 5 speed (bell housing, crossmember, propshaft etc) that I was intending to install once I had rebuild a 2.3 slant that I have in my garage. time constraints mean that the engine will have to wait until next year, but I would quite like to fit the 5 speed box to the van, which is currently fitted with a stock 1.8L slant (1976).
I know the input shaft on the box will need shortening (does anyone know by how much?), and the spigot will need changing, but is the conversion essentially the same as for the 2.3, bearing in mind the 1.8 has a smaller clutch? I have a complete clutch kit for a 2.3 + 5 speed - can I fit this to a 1.8?
cheers
Phil

Five speed.
Hi Philbut,
If I remember correctly the size differance is about 1/4 of an inch, so as long as the plate is not bigger than the faced area on the flywheel, and it matches the pressure ring size all should work fine.
In my own Bedford at the moment I have a 1.8 Viva clutch plate fitted and it work just fine, it is a 1/4 inch smaller than the old plate was.

Lop off.
Hi Philbut,
All you need to do is measure the length on the Bedford box you take out, failing that I can measure it up for you on a gearbox input shaft I have here.
Just let me know if you need me to do that.
Doug.

That would be brilliant - I'm not being lazy, but it would help as I'd like to get the box all ready to drop in prior to taking the 4 speed out as I use the van regularly and what with the evenings drawing in I don't have so long to get jobs done after work.

Input land.
Hi Philput,
Just checked the input shaft spigot length at 22mm, the finished polished area at 21mm.
Getting that length correct is important as if it is too long it will put pressure on the front mainshaft bearing.
Doug.
