floats like a boat - handling help please.

Hi everyone

Its been a while since ive been on here but I need a bit of help.

I have a 1978 Hymer sitting one CF chassis. I have had two other CFs before this one.

The two before that handled very good but this hymer is almost un drivable.

Im looking for some ideas for suspension upgrades that will hopefully help this old girl driving like a boat!

She has just been in for a MOT and Im having a set of new old stock shocks fitted in the hope that they might be a bit stiffer than the old ones in there now.

I really enjoyed driving my two previous CFs but this one is a real chore to the point that I dont like or trust the way it handles.

I was thinking about putting in a air bag system in the rear and trying to find a stiffer front shock but dont know where to start with either so any help would be amazing.

Many thanks

Floating.

Hi bear,

My CF has an old Pioneer body and like yourself I did not like the way it handled when I brought it home, so I up graded the rear end single leaf springs by making up spring carriers and fitting Vauxhall Astra rear coils.
They are mounted on top of the U bolt spring plates and go into a top carrier welded onto the chassis and this has made a big improvment to the handling.
The steel and the coil springs cost me £80.00, and the whole job was done in one day.
Since then I have fitted another 13 gallon fuel tank in place of the spare wheel carrier and the handling is still good.

Doug.

Bear,

I have these fitted to my Autosleeper Coachbuilt

Not sure if the company is still in business.
You add the air via a Schrader valve in the driver's step well. I usually run at about 40 psi.

I should point out these are 1997 prices

I don't know if they're any good but these are on ebay. I think they are probably the same as the first solution here

Hello Bear,
Here's a set of home grown spring assistors that were on one of my old vans; very much the same as Doug was describing.

Thanks guys.

I have been thinking about air suspension for a while and I think thats the route ill go down at some stage after I do some research.

In the mean time I found a pair of rear shocks in my box of bits that I have fitted and it has made a huge difference. But I think with the weight of the van they are doing to much extra work.

I need to find some front shocks to replace the current ones.

When i got my CF it was like driving a bouncy castle!

It has the above air suspension units fitted but the nearside had melted its pipe on the exhaust and had no air in it.

This coupled with the fact that both rear shocks were doing nothing meant that it rolled and bounced all over the shop.

Fixed pipe, new shocks, brakes adjusted and now she really is a pleasure to drive.
