Landrover Tdi a CF 350??

I have a bedford cf recovery truck 350 with an opel manta 2.0 petrol fitted. Its ok when im carrying my vintage tractor on it but when I add the caravan behind, its useless. I have a Landrover Discovery 200tdi 2.5 diesel engine in my shed. I figured that if i can squeeze this lump in it will solve all my problems! Has anyone attempted putting any tdi Landrover engine in a CF? Or does anyone know if it will mate easily onto the 5 speed ZF box thats already in my truck? Any hints/ tips would be greatly appreciated!

Any ideas??? The second option is to source a 2.3 GM diesel engine but ive heard horror stories about these. Are they a poor engine or are they under rated??

Engine upgrade.

Hi denva,

If it was an upgrade I was going to do on your 350 I would be looking for a Ford Transit diesel 2.5 and belhousing with a Ford clutch, with electric cooling fans.
The 2.5 diesel ford engine will fit in with some engine mount mods and the sump cut for clearance at the crossmember.
Some changes to exhuast and fuel lines, you would need the fuel lines to and from the tank and maybe the tank with the in tank primary pump to feed the injector pump on ign priming through a diesel filter.
A lot of work but for what you are wanting this motor to do it would be a good way to go.

Doug.

Hi Denva,

The Land Rover 200tdi puts out around 111 bhp.

We have a Defender 110, 200tdi and the engine provides quite good performance.

But, we used to have a Range Rover Classic 300tdi ( also 111 bhp ) and towing our caravan with it, it was hard work. Up a slight incline, 60mph was the maximum speed attainable, with no acceleration in reserve.

I don't know the horse power of the Ford unit, but it would need to be similar to the 200tdi to give adequate performance.

As to how easy the 200tdi would mate to the zf box, I have no idea.

Thank you for your suggestions, it seems like i should be going down the Transit Di engine route. Which Di engine do i need?? I believe there is the square manifold type (early), and the Banana manifold type (not so early!). Will either of these types go in or do I need a specific one? Also, would it be better if i used the transit gearbox too, or stuck with the ZF one?
Thank you in advance.

My van has this engine with an auto box.Let's just say it takes a while to pick up speed!

But you're not allowed to go faster than that anyway.

Yes, but this was a Range Rover, pride of Solihull, the go anywhere, do anything, off road marvel, the vehicle that could tow anything, anywhere!

It was cr*p!!!!!!!

Even with a manual five speed gearbox ( which was awful ) towing a fourteen foot caravan was hard work!!!!

Now our last one with a 4.6 V8 was a very different animal!!!!

I know it did around fifteen to the gallon whilst towing, and not much more without the van, but it was easily able to maintain 60mph up or down slopes.

When towing, there is no substitute for horse power. If you can get it from a diesel then it should be more economical than petrol.
