Prospective Owner Questions

Not sure if this is the right place for these kind of enquiries or not, but if anyone can give us any advice it would be really appreciated.

We are looking for a CF camper and so far have not found the right one.

Having viewed a 76 CF today I have a couple of questions about the condition of the body and how scared to be of the rusty areas. Underneath looked solid, the places that had suffered were the footwells, gutters and wheelarches.

The drivers footwell had some holes, that would be patched up for the MOT before it was sold.

The wheel arches had a couple of areas with some paint bubbling, though it was difficult to tell how bad it was under the paint.

The gutters had surface rust spots on them which I dont suppose to be a problem, but under the gutter on the front just above the windscreen was also showing signs of rust (which kind of worried me).

Additionally the drivers side sill while looking solid was far from straight, I would assume this is bad filler but is there anything else we should have looked for here.

I realise vague descriptions and not seeing it yourself makes it difficult to asses but any advice on the likely severity of these signs of rust would be really useful.

Rust.

Hi sara_haveron,

At that age you must expect a fair bit of rust, I take it you were looking at a pop up roof type CF, you can reduce the rust area by going for an alloy bodied or fibreglass bodied model.
But they are the same cab or wheelarch construction but chassis and underside are normaly good.

Doug.

Congratulations on two excellent choices so far....wanting to buy a cf & joining this forum.
The rust places you mention are specific to all cf's,unfortunately it goes with the territory of a vehicle this old.
If you (or your partner) have a practical mind then none of these things should cause you a problem. The "joy" of owning a vehicle like this is that you get to work on it yourself & make it your own.I'm not a purist that has to have everything original,(or indeed perfect) keeping the van on the road is the main thing.I've had mine since 1999 & use it as a daily driver.(apart from a four year off road gap)

Hi Sara, whereabouts in London are you? I'm in North London and would be happy to have a look at something local'ish if you find such a beastie. As mentioned already, these vehicles are 'getting on' a bit and finding a pristine example would no doubt be a little difficult. The plus side is that the forum is a good source of support and advice. Also the CF's are not the most complex things in the world to fettle and a lot of stuff is within the reach of most owners or people that owners know. I am lucky to have a mechanic friend who loves these Bedford's which makes it easy and he is only in Enfield.

Cheers

Ken

Thanks for the replies and encouragement, we did not go for the van I mentioned at the start of this thread but are still on the hunt, its just a narrower hunt having seen the CF we are no longer considering anything else.

Ken, we are in Ruislip, so Enfield would not be that far to go for a good mechanic, so may be after that information soon.

Many thanks
Sara
