Wallowing Campervans.

I am contemplating (fairly seriously) on getting a classic campervan.

Having spoken to a number of folk with vans for sale it seems that many of the coachbuilt ones tend to wallow to a greater or lesser degree (Possibly due to long overhangs and short wheelbase ?) and I want to avoid this.

Does anyone know if many builders used the CF LWB twin wheel chassis? If so, which ones?

I reckon that this might be one way to increase the chances of getting reasonable stability.

I have looked at various classic brochures on the net and seem to have drawn a blank.

Of course, being a newbie I may be barking up the wrong tree altogether !

Cheers,

Pete.

Suspension.

Hi petethetug,

I have a short wheel base CF with a Pioneer body which is high topped, and to stop the body roll I added coil spings to the rear on top of the leaf spring.
Or you can fit adustable rear shock absorbers to stiffen up the suspension and stop the body roll.

Doug.

Hi Pete,

I have these Airide air springs fitted to my Autosleeper Coachbuilt

They were fitted at a motorcaravan show (many, many years ago) and I don't know if Symonspeed are still in business.

You could try http:/www.airide.co.uk/ as they seem to fit the bill.

Mine are linked to a Schrader valve in the driver step well and I tend to run them at about 40 psi.

Have you tried driving one to see what you think? The only time I found mine to be a bit lively was if I was driving a 'bit over enthusiastically' through windy roads. On normal driving it was fine. I suppose it depends on what you are used to driving. If you drive something sporty with hard suspension then the CF will seem wallowy. If on the other hand you drive a Morris Marina it'll seem very stiff

Hi Colin,

I used to own a Morris Marina in a vile pea green colour, but it was easy to drive, comfortable and very easy to work on. I know it was cr*p, but then so were Ford Cortinas and Hillman Avengers. In fact near enough all medium sized cars were ghastly in one way or another those days. Now if you really want the ultimate cr*p it has to be the Allegro! My father had one and managed to twist the body whilst curbing it to avoid a child in snowy weather. Tin foil for the bodywork?

Thanks all for mostly constructive advice. I gives me an Idea which way to go if I get a swb single rear wheel job.

Would still like to hear from anyone with a twin rear wheel chassis though !

Thanks.

Pete.
