Iriot

Hi everyone. Just bought a Y reg cf van conversion on the spur of the moment, with no forethought, planing or need I just liked the look of it. I know nothing about campers/ motor-homes or bedfords.

I have so far deduced that it is a 2279cc something, 4 very low speed gearbox and a twin wheel axle with a 47/9 or 5.22:1 diff

As A Eddie Stobart driver I know a bit about holding up traffic but this van seems to have a gear or two missing, flat out seems to be about 45mph. I have calculated that the speedo, with the help of GPS, and a mate with a big truck is reading 15mph too fast. I also know the gearbox has been changed recently.

Any help, ideas or advice would be appreciated

Gearbox.

Hi e8kmc,

Welcome to the club, you seem to have bought a much messed about with CF, you could have a low geared pickup truck ZF gearbox or a low gear van Vauxhall gearbox.
It sounds like that diff is commercal pickup geared if the speedo is that far out, I rebuild gearboxes as a retired mechanic for the club and others so I know these differances are a fact.
You say you know the motor has had the gearbox changed resently, to look at you would not see any differance from the look of the box because it is just the gearing that is different.
You don't say if the van is petrol or diesel?

Doug.

Thanks for the welcome peoples and thanks for the information Doug.

To clarify, it's a petrol engine, the previous owner said he thought it was a Opel engine, which actually sounds really quite sweet.

Can I rectify the gearbox/diff problem, if so, how would i go about identifying the present box, if needed and finding a replacement gearbox

Thanks all

Gearbox.

Hi e8kmc,

From the outside there is no ID marks that I have ever found, but on the input shaft that slides through the clutch plate into the flywheel there is markings to identify the box gearing, its as if Vauxhall decided it was none of your concern what the differance might be cause you just drive the van!
I have seen two gearboxes on ebay Bedford spares sites resently but they were over £300.00 mark plus carrage, I have a gearbox on the shelf but I know for a fact that it is a low geared one.
I hope to get a box sent up to me from Wales in the near future but I don't know what gearing it will have or what state it will be in until it gets here.

Doug.

What sort of markings should we be looking for,Doug?I've had a gearbox in my lock up for a few years so I could have a gander at that.

Thanks Doug

lets just say, if the gearbox that's coming is the correct one for me, and is good working order and you decide to sell, consider it sold.

Gearbox.

Hi e8kmc,

If the gearbox arrive's as promised and it is in good working order then I will get back on to you and let you decide what you want to do, you'll have first chance of it.
The markings I spoke of are grooved rings cut into the splines of the input shaft on one box they are close together and on the other box they are apart.
The denote the number of teeth on the four gear.

Doug.

Hi e8kmc, welcome to the world of bedfords, just to clarify a couple of points,
the cf1's and the facelift's were fitted with the vauxhall slant engine. The slant was in 1800cc or 2279cc, the cf2 which came out in 1984 had the 1979 cc Opel engine which was mounted upright in the engine bay. They have different bell housings for the gearboxes. So if yours has an Opel engine, it has been converted from a slant.
Good luck in your search. regards davie.

Hi people thanks for all your feedback. It looks like i may have bitten off more than i can chew, but hey ho, it keeps you on your toes.

I think I'm going to have to go the few of the Bedford meets, so i can glean a bit more information from the professionals on my o'l beast, and move on from there.

Thanks Doug much appreciated, i'm not sure if i'd know a spline if I saw one, so stick my name on it

auldreekie, Is it a steep slant or just not quite level?

Going on my first expedition with her next week to see how she goes, probably not wise but that's what i bought it for.. I'm sure sure all it's faults and foibles will raise their ugly heads from day one..

thanks again all

Hi, the slant engine is like the left bank of a V8. The inlet manifold is on the top and the exhaust manifold is between the spark plugs on the passenger side. The 2litre opel engine has the exhaust on the drivers side below the carb. regards Davie.

Thanks Graham

Just had a look on eBay it says it’s for a diesel engine, mine’s a petrol I’m not sure without advice whether they are interchangeable.

I’m going to do some research over the weekend.

Thanks for help
