backfire through the carb

So my old girl hasent been run for a while till just before xmas. I got her back on the road and down to the MOT center where they tuned her up to pass as she was running a bit rich.
Before I took her down she was back firing through the carb and I thought that she just needed a tune. But now its had a tune its still doing it.

Any ideas anyone?

Ive never touched the carb so dont know what condition its in but it runs ok once she warms up but when she is cold and I put my foot down she just dies and I get a little bang out of the carb. She will also give a little pop from the carb headding up hill.

As the weather is starting to get a bit better I want to get her out more.

Hi backfire through the carb is normally timing so a tune should have fixed it for you. have you got point, or electronic distributor, and have the head been converted which makes a big difference to the timing.

I have a point system. I had a electric system in my previous bedford. I dont know where to find an electric ignition kit.
I dont know about the head. Its a German Hymer so I only have a very small history.

Timing.

Hi bear,

I have the slant 2.3 engine in my Bedford with the old points system, and I have not had to change the points for the last three years, about 3,500 miles.
So your way forward has to be getting the ign. timing set on its mark while running and then getting the points set up using a dwell meter, the setting should be 68 plus or minous two.
Another thing to have a check on is the timing chain tensioner, if the pad for the tensioner is worn down or the spring adjustment has ran out this will effect the vales timing, check for chain rattle while ticking over.

Doug.

popping back is a sine of the condenser braking down with a to lean mixture.

Id personal fit new points and condenser. drain the old petrol out of the tank and fill with fresh stuff(nothing thats over 3mth old though as it goes off) then get the carb tuned up and check that all vacuum pipes are not perished.

another area to check is the flap on the intake pipe this should divert hot air from the exhaust manifold when the engine is cold , a missing pipe needs to be refitted.
