1983 Autosleeper Panel Van Door Mirrors

Once again I'm throwing myself on the tender mercies of the club experts....
How on earth do I remove the original mounting bosses for the door mirrors from the door skins when there is no apparent access to the two bolts when the door cards are removed ?
The previous owner hacked the ball joints off the original bosses and (badly) fitted different mirror housings which have sheared off - so to get my new MOT I have to get them off to fit proper original replacement units. All advice gratefully received !
Many thanks

with the door panel off you need a 3/8 spanner and a peice of string tied to it for when you drop it in the door we all do look though the opening on the inside and you will see the bolts and undo them with the spanner. trying not to drop the bolts there are 2 to each mirror

Sorry to be a klutz, but where do I put the spanner in order to be alble to get it on to the bolts please ? The inner metal skin of the door seems to have no apertures in it !

Once you've removed the door card you should see this,or similar. The larger opening is where you access the mirror fittings. You do need small arms!

No you don't.To get an mot you have to have adequate rear view vision, whether they're "proper" or "original" is irrelevant.
Gethin's the man to ask about mot criteria.

Ah - thanks Rich. Looks like I hadn't gone far enough in trying to remove the door card so didn't see that lower aperture.....certainly does look like an arm skinning exercise.... and getting the bolts back on promises to be fun (NOT !)
Will let you know how full the swear box gets.....

Oddly enough I've been looking at this problem with a view to replacing my broken passenger side mirror. I came to the conclusion that I'd have better luck going down through the window slot rather than up through the hole in the door.

An average spanner fits and will just about reach. I need a slightly longer handle one to get a decent turn though, so I have gone any further yet.

You'll probably be better off going the "traditional" route,Tim.There's not that much work involved & if you drop the nut or the spanner.......

Success ! Using Rich's Bedford Rope Trick, the old mounting bosses were removed and the new mirrors fitted without a single expletive being uttered. Good idea to coat the threads of the bolts liberally in grease and run them up and down in the threads of the new mirrors before fitting - then you can do them up by hand and only tighten finally with the spanner (which is 7/16 AF by the way)
Thanks again for the help !
