Wobbly cooling fan

A couple of weeks ago when parking, my CF2 introduced a new noise to its repertoire. It was a horrible grinding repetitive noise and it sounded like it was being amplified through a speaker.

Turns out it was the cooling fan. More precisely its the entire cooling fan assembly. Its loose and wobbling about and making a dry rattling noise.

In a case like this,

1. is it likely some investigation might reveal it merely needs tightening up?

2. Is it likely to need replacing in part or in whole?

3. Is it unwise to drive it until resolved? The fan is still turning it just sounds like a 1970's tombola machine and clearly wont be as efficient rattling around on the spindle.

4. Are any other ancilliaries likely to be affected?

and finally

5. Might I be better off taking the whole lot off and fitting an electric fan a la Kenlowe?

Thanks for any answers to any of these questions.

cooling fan

Hi Tim, by your discription the fan has give up the ghost. What ever you do you will need to renew the water pump,as this is part of the fan.I would say not to drive the van until this is fixed.Wether or not to fit an electric fan is up tp you.Cheers+Beers,Jim.

Not necessarily. If it's a viscous fan, something could have come adrift internally in the fan mechanism.
We're not going to know until Tim/someone takes a look.

I'm not going to know for a few weeks as I'm going away and haven't had any time to look up until now as I work away from home. I think its just the bearings in the pulley wheel. The spindle from the pump is solid and its only from the conical shaped wheel that there is movement. Its significant though and with the engine running the fan wobbles about badly and so is not cooling efficiently and will also be placing a degree, however small, of stress on the spindle.

Will need to take the front off and the rad out when I'm next at home, and if it is repairable that's all good but if it isn't and I can't replace the pulley wheel without replacing the water pump I'll probably just strip the viscous fan off and stick twin electrics on.

Ordered a new water pump pump from a very decent bloke on eBay, woolfie1963. He gets occasional Bedford nos items in and is definitely worth checking out when you need a part.

My bedford had a grinding noise then I noticed the fixed fan was loose too.
So I removed the radiator etc only to find it was the water pump bearings that had gone yet it wasn't leaking!
I struggled to find a pump to fit (same as the one pictured on this thread) and ended up buying a brand new one for a vauxhaull victor fd for the grand sum of £10 from a local car spares shop.
With the help of a friend and a press we pushed the bit you bolt the fan onto down the shaft about 50mm, re-cut the threads for the fan bolts and the pipe and hey presto a pump that fit was created!
1000 miles later and no noise or water leaks!

Update...

Replacement water pump on. Old one had been on since day one and had to be cut into with an angle grinder to get it off in pieces.
