Starter motor making grinding noises Evening all. Got a problem that arrived a few weeks ago and i've not solved yet so turning to you for help. The van usually starts first time, and if not will do soon after with good strong cranking. That's suddenly changed and now the starter makes a grinding noise with the engine only turning very slowly, not fast enough to fire and after 5 seconds or so the revs die to virtually nothing.I checked the battery, but no joy, it's fine. Then the terminals of the battery but they appear OK. Then the main positive lead to the solenoid and i've also cleaned up and re-bolted the main engine earth. Still not much difference, cranking much too slowly. If I jump start it with another car running at high revs the starter does turn faster, generally just enough for it to start, but nothing like as good as it used to be. Any ideas? I'm still pretty well convinced it's to do with bad earths or feeds somewhere, but not sure what to check next? It's a 1973 2.3 petrol. Cheers, ---------------------- | Sun 21 Jul 2013 @ 23:15 |

How did you check the battery?Volts or amps? The fact that it improves with a jump start would indicate to me that the battery's at fault.Have you tried a different battery? ---------------------- | Mon 22 Jul 2013 @ 02:03 |

Battery voltage fine, have swapped in another working battery from my other car and vice-versa. I've cleaned the battery end of the earth strap, but not the other end. I put a jump lead from the battery negative direct to the engine to eliminate any of the earth straps and it didn't really improve anything, so I'm left with thinking it's the actual starter motor, or some electrical connection between the starter and the solenoid...? ---------------------- | Mon 22 Jul 2013 @ 12:30 |

Well after ruling out everything but the starter motor, I rang Adrian who confirmed that when these starters go, they often run slowly before packing up altogether. £140 for a recon starter and we're back in business. Now the small matter of a 3.5 hour drive to Whitby for summer holiday on Saturday! ---------------------- | Wed 24 Jul 2013 @ 22:26 |
