ENGINE WOES

Since I posted last week about our starting troubles I've discovered our 1983 2.3 petrol engine is knackered and needs an expensive rebuild.
I would rather replace it instead with a good running unit, but this is complicated by the fact that our van is AUTO which apparently has a different crank from the manual versions. I hope I don't get told off for this, but I'm appealing for help here because I'm doubtful many members delve into the Wanted ads (where I have also posted)
Hope someone out there may have a suitable engine !

Hi,can't you get a standerd engine and replace the crank with yours,even if you have to grind your crak and change the shells.Cheers,Jim.

There is no difference between an auto engine and a normal engine except the extra bits added.
the cranks are the same and all you need to do is swap the flywheel over .
take care as there is a shouldered bolt which only fits in 1 hole ........

Hi gethin, I find your statement about the crankshafts being the same rather strange. When I tried to mate up a manual engine onto an automatic box I could not get it to fit as the gearbox and engine faces would not come together. So I ended up swapping over the crankshafts on each engine and everything mated up tickety boo. So in my opinion the crankshafts are different where the spigot shafts bearing fits. regards davie.

Thanks again for the legendary CF-UK collective know-how ! O-pinion (geddit ?!)is clearly divided on the detail but it looks as if I'll need to pay attention to the flywheel at the very least and possibly the crank. Cheers

hello likaleica, the auto version of the cf does not have a flywheel as such. It is called a flexplate which is very thin and has the starter ring gear attached and replaces the flywheel on the crankshaft, as fitted to the manual gearbox version. The flexplate is also bolted to the torque converter with three bolts which can be fitted or removed from underneath after removing the bottom covers. The front of the torque converter will not mate up with the manual crankshaft. regards Davie.

auto crankshaft

Hi I was an automatic transmision specialist in my day and can confirm that you need to change the crankshaft on a 2.3 Bedford manual to be able to fit an automatic Borg-Warner gearbox, unlike the early Fords which were transferable and I did that on my first motorhome. I found the advantage in a manual is that you can fit an overdrive to give another 2 gears like ours.

Thanks BJ for the confirmation.
I've posted a wanted advert for an automatic version engine but they're so rare I'm not holding my breath !
Does anyone know what would be involved in fitting a manual engine and box in place of the automatic and whether it would actually be much cheaper than simply having my current engine rebuilt at an estimated cost of £1500 ?

Hi. Now funnily enough I have a auto engine 2.3 slant 19000k rebuilt now wasn't going to sell it yet but everything has a price and if it was a sensible offer I'd be interested
