Garage hourly rates.

Hi to all,

I have been retired now for six years and the Renault garage that I worked in for ten years were charging £72.00 for my time the year I retired, the lowest hourly rate in this area from a back street garage is now £40.00 an hour.

Hi Guy,
I take it your clutch thrust bearing is noisy on long journeys?
So is mine. Noticed it when we went to France a couple of weeks ago.
I've already looked around as I'll pull my gearbox out myself and do it.
I've been to Specialised Motor Components on Ashley Road in Parkstone as they are quite good with parts for older motors. They can only get complete clutch kits for about £120. Bearings only are not listed, so may be a case of looking for a new old stock item, maybe at Adrian Bailey.
I think my clutch is actually okay but if the whole lot is out, I might as well.
I'll let you know how it goes.
Frank

Clutch kits.

Hi XSFrank,

You should buy a couple of those clutch kits at that price and store them away!

Adrian Bailey told me there are two different types of thrust bearings used on the CF1. That's why I wanted to get my gearbox out first to see what it looks like and I can check it's right before I buy the clutchkit in the store.

Graham,
I've had a look through all the parts you have listed on the auction part. Couldn't see any thrustbearings, but they look similar to this I would guess
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bedford-TK-J-330-Clutch-Release-Bearing/150417571443
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BEDFORD-Y-SERIES-CLUTCH-THRUST-BEARING-/380122373801
BTW, how does it work if I wanted some of them? Do I have to bid on them or can I just email you what I'm after? I assume they are all spares you have for sale. Once I start looking over my CF before the MOT in November, I may need things like wheel cylinders etc.

Cheers Frank

Thrust bearing

Hi Graham,The difference in the bearings is the depth of the body. The ones Frank showed look similar but I don't think they will fit.It is best to take it apart to check which you have then make a note for next time.Cheers Jim.

Looking at those pics on greedbay it seems we did have one but it was sold to a member last year.

The part number is shown in the pic for anyone searching for one.

All the parts on the auction site,or pics of on photobucket, have been donated to the club.I do a bit of research to get an idea of price & start at that price. The auction then runs for seven days & is open to all to bid on.We've never had a bidding war yet!

I also have a few spares that I've bought as job lots or individually that are available.Ask me if there's something particular you're looking for!

Well I've been busy today and had a look at my noisy clutch bearing.
It turns out there was nothing wrong with it and the clanging noise was due to the return spring on the clutch arm missing. That's the spring in the picture which came with the release bearing kit Graham posted before.

As I was driving along, the arm would vibrate and then hit the prongs of the clutch pressure plate. I thought that noise was the bearings gone.

What's the noise like your clutch is doing Guy? A whining bearing or a clanging as well. If so, check the return spring is on like in the picture below.

Whilst I was under the van and checked everything, I notice all parts of the clutch operating linkage were pretty worn. Have a look at the pictures. So I ended up welding the holes on the adjuster bar, pivot and cable end, cleaning them up and re-drilling back to 5/16" and 3/8". Greased all and refitted with new clevis pins. Now it works so much better and it's also nice and quite.

Guy, if you're having any work done and possibly a new clutch fitted, make sure to check the condition of all these parts, otherwise you'll end up with unnecessary play on the linkage or pedal.
If you take the rubber bung on the opposite side of the clutch arm off, you can get a couple of fingers in the bell housing and turn the release bearing. If it feels rough, then it's gone.

Lost movement.

Hi to all,

I found that due to worn clevis pins and elongated holes a lot of movement was being lost and adjustment only served to stretch the clutch cable.
So I re-drilled the holes and fitted bigger hardened clevis pins to reduce unwanted slack and make adjustment more accurate.
If the adjustment is set too tight it may cause damage at the bulk-head where the clutch cable passes through to couple up the clutch pedal.

Hi Guy
Details for Specialised Motor Components
291-301 Ashley Rd
Poole BH14 9DZ
01202 744244
The clutch kit I asked for was for a 1980 Bedford CF250 2.3L Petrol
They are always really helpful. Just say I came in about 3 weeks ago and asked about availability. They might even remember. It was about £100 plus VAT.

Cheers Frank

The thrust bearing is part of the kit.
I know there are two different versions, but I would hope the kit will have the right one in it. They have the correct vehicle details.
If not they'll take it back and try to get the other one.

Good luck mate.

Cheers Frank
