A new noise.

Hi to all,

As you get used to a motor you can pick up very quickly on a change in sound, and on the journey home from Moffat a minor breakdown happened when the wire to the fuel cut-off switch on the carb came off.
So when I pulled up at a round-about the engine cut-out which of-course makes you very popular with all the other road users in their computerised cars.
And after that I could hear a new noise which I think is coming from my alternator, well I hope that is where the problem is but as an old gaffer of mine used to say just let it develop!
Since I bought a an alternator at Thirlstane it would suit me if that is just what the noise turns out to be, time will tell!

Tomorrows work.

Hi to all,

I will take off the drive belt and run the engine to check if that has cured my new noise, failing that I maybe looking at something more serious and there for more expensive, the old screw-driver to the earhole test indicates that the noise is loudest from the alternator so maybe the bearings have gone.

New noise cured.

Hi to all,

Having removed the drive belt and checked the alternator bearings it soon became clear that the problem was in-fact the belt not the alternator its self so a new belt has been fitted and the noise has gone.
A much cheaper repair than first thought, very pleased!

V belts.

Hi to all,

Because the V-belt drives by grip on the sides of the V once it wares it drops down into the pulleys and loses grip and in my case started to make a strange noise.
At first I thought the front bearing in the alternator had gone but once I had checked by hand with the belt off and had a look at the ware on the belt, that was the first thing to replace and it was the cure.
So much cheaper that I thought it was going to be!
