Auto or 5 Speed

Afternoon all

Am I mental??? I recently bought a CF2 1987, and its ace.....love every thing about it.....

I have the 2l Petrol 5 speed gearbox, no problems with either, both working great, cruises easily at 50 / 60, gets there in good time for a beast of a thing.....

My Dilemma.....the wife has driven an Automatic for 8 yrs now, and does not want to drive a manual.....I too have also driven the same auto as we only had one other car......I suppose we both got lazy, as I am thinking about changing the beast to an Auto gearbox.....so she will drive it, and for comfort when on long runs etc.....

So my question is.....can this be done easily if I do go for it....

Will the lag be massive in changing to Auto.....will it become a snail.....

Am I mad for even thinking about this, as I have been told the 2l and 5 speed is a good combo for the van.....

What do you seasoned Bedheads think please???

Cheers

Jon...

Automatic.

Hi FatJon,

For what it is worth I would stay with what you have and make the wife learn to work with the manual gear-change, and your just lazy you already have a five speed box and in good shape, there was an automatic box on e-bay last week and a prop-shaft with it, which you would need.
But you would also need the kick-down cables and pedal as well as the torque convertor this in turn means that you would have to change the crank-shaft in your engine or buy an engine along with the gearbox.
And most of these old type automatic gearboxes were just three speed, apart from all this you have to make sure you get a good one, you might be lucky!!
The best of these automatic gearboxes were fitted in to the six cylinder ambulance Bedford's and even they give problems.
Sorry if this is not what you want to hear but you did ask, maybe you will hear from someone who thinks its a great idea.
