Fuelling Up Problems

Hello guys, a noob to the scene, and to the site. I've swapped my 2.5ltr V6 S Type Sport, full leather trim, 200bhp.. for a 1985 Glendale 1000L 2.3ltr. And I couldn't be happier. (I'll post some pics later)

I mean it's not going to be totally hassle free motoring, but I've just done the brakes and replaced the alternator and drove it home from Southampton to Manchester in one night and she didn't miss a beat.

The mechanic has looked over her and said underseal the chassis, and re seal the outside because someone has used silicone instead of elastic sealant. (A job for a months time I think) but apart from that, the engine is a beaut...

So I'm pleased she's not a pup, however, Slick 50 and a few other bits n pieces to glam up the engine a bit. I'm sure I'll get to know the tricks of the trade from you the experts.

Now, my first question is this, how the hell do you get fuel in these things... The unleaded pumps just wont work, I have to fill up two fuel containers then put fuel in that way... Using the pump just wont work, it just clicks and clicks and clicks and clicks... Its the click you would normally relate to the tank being full...

I can assure you the tank is not full... but I simply can't get fuel in it... is there a technique?

Please help its driving me nuts...

Many thanks,

Dave and delilah.

I have a similar problem with mine, the first two thirds goes in fine then there is a big blowback of petrol out of the filler and after that I can get quite a bit more in but only at a very slow rate.

I posed the question a while back on here and one chap said that the problem will be due to the tank vent pipe being blocked.

Its my plan to have a look at this over the winter, the vent pipe should be a small diameter pile coming from the top of the neck or the filler pipe somewhere to allow air to escape as the level comes up in the tank.

Good luck with the van and don't forget the fuel additive, you will find this place a massive source of help and information.

at the top of the tank there should be a metal pipe about 1/2 " in diameter with a 90' bend .
this in turn connects to a rubber pipe which is petrol resistant or it will perish.
this pipe connects to the top of the filler neck just inside the bodywork

if you look on the inside of the van there should be a metal cover plate over the filler hose held in place by screws

removal makes it easier to either renew the pipe or just general clean up .

Had the same prob. Tank out, drilled hole (greased drill bit to collect swarf), short copper pipe, glued in, rubber pipe petrol safe ala Gethin. Pipe up to filler cap, (about 10cm down). Worked like a dream. Sold the van (upgrade) and the new one was the same Still...I new how to do it AGAIN!!. By the way, I think that diesel tanks had that pipe fitted as a fuel return. Petrol tanks had no breather (at least not any I`ve had out)

Just catching up on the forum been DIY in last few month's (18)
Have noticed in the past that it happens a lot in the coach built type. where
the builders have not put the petrol filler high enough and there is not enough
down drop for the petrol to flow thus causing the petrol to blow back and shut
itself off ? just a thought

Side fillers.

Hi,

I have had to replace the air pipe on my Bedford because of the same problem with the side filler neck, decided to go a bit further on mine and done away with the spare wheel carrier under the back and fitted a second fuel tank with a good air vent system.
If the air cannot get out of the tank faster than the fuel is coming in it will air-lock, I now use the rear mounted tank filler but have an SU electric pump which transfers fuel to the front tank.
My reason for going down this route is it gives me the tank space to take on twice as much fuel at as low a price as I can buy it and it works out that I can have some fuel left after thee hundred and fifty miles at 55mph.
All tried and tested and very pleased with that setup, just another option to think about!

I have another issue with fueling - only just bought my CF2 and on my first fill up from empty it only took £30 of petrol when I noticed petrol leaking underneath the van onto the forecourt. The petrol gauge now shows completely full. So two questions - 1. Surely £30 of fuel won't fill the tank from empty and 2. Is there an overflow in the filler neck causing the fuel to spill when full.
