My own work list.

Hi to all,

Today I have made a start to getting some of the work list done, striped out the radiator complete with electric fans after managing to save most of the coolant.
And so far I have replaced the timing belt (it was six years old) the alternator belt was replaced a month ago so just a refit and tension needed there, got the bumper drilled in line with the bottom pulley and fitted the starter dog in place of the crank-shaft bolt.
Had to take a notch out of the cross-member behind the bumper to clear the new starting handle (number plate covers the hole in the bumper) and all lined up and worked fine.
Next part of the job was to raise the radiator by two inches to give enough clearance for the starting handle to pass underneath, the next problem is the radiator hoses, top one I extended with a short piece of metal pipe so that it reached but the bottom hose I will have to try and work out tomorrow.
Have not started the engine using the handle yet that can wait until everything is back together, engine has been started on the key just to make sure all it working as it should.

A small conversion.

Hi to all,

If this small conversion works as I think it should it should be the end of the lack of battery power after a long period of frost and damp weather, as long as there is enough power left in the battery to bring on the dash-board lights it will be possible to start a cold engine.

Back together.

Hi to all,

By midday today all connections to cooling fans and all hoses were back in place with coolant refilled and engine running, had to reinvent the bottom hose because of the radiator being higher.
Once the system has cooled down after the electric fans being checked I will check for leaks and top-up the system, just being able to roll over the engine by hand a few turns on a cold day will be an aid to easier starting.

The finishing touches.

Hi to all,

So with the main job done all that was left to do was to refill and bleed through the coolant reconnect the electric fan and let the engine run up to temp
and having an expansion bottle which can be unclipped and held higher than the heater made that job a lot easier.
I will try out the starting handle on a cold engine tomorrow morning just to make sure it has all been worth the effort, takes me back to my Landrover days!

Options.

Hi to all,

Since doing the starting handle conversion my old Bedford has started first time on the key, (does it know I now have another option) but tonight it is hard frost so tomorrow will be the real test.

Still leaking.

Hi to all,

That small water leak at the inlet manifold is still not sealed so that is the job for tomorrow, it is coming from one of studs holding on the thermostat cover so might be coming up the treads.
Might need to take out the stud and drill out for a bigger stud into a newly cut tread, I will see once it is off the engine.

Starting handle test.

Hi to all,

Finally got around to testing the hand start this cold and frosty morning and one complete turn just to make sure the fuel was fully primed, half choke and ign switched on and one quick hard turn and off she went at a fast Idle, hand throttle making all the difference so very glad I fitted that.
Very pleased with that and well worth all the planning and hard work!

Manifold.

Hi to all,

Finally got the leak cured at the thermostat housing on the inlet manifold, small and hard to find, so the next job will be the gearbox change but the weather will decide when I can get that done.
If the forecasters have got it right we could have a white Christmas which will put the gearbox job into the spring.

A cold and frosty morning.

Hi to all,

Since it was a cold frosty damp morning I thought if I can start the old Bedford with the starting handle in this I will able to start it anywhere in any kind of weather, it took three or four goes before it caught and fired up but the good thing is it started.

Keep your thumb tight to your finger Doug! Can misfire and dislocate the joint. Very painful and impossible to count your compensation money, (experience)

Old hand.

Hi Bob,

I started my mechanic's working life on tractors Bob and as you will know you learn very quickly not to put your thumb round the wrong side of that handle.

Compression.

Hi to all,

After that cold damp frosty handle start up yesterday morning I have noticed a slight bend in my home made starting handle, so a bit more compression than I thought I had.
Nothing a small strengthening brace will not put right.

Work list.

Hi to all,

After child minding and repairs to brakes for people with no money I hope to get back to some work of my own over this weekend and with the starting put right either by the flick of a switch or the use of a starting handle I can now start on some body repairs.
The first thing on the list is to buy another waterproof cover so that I can keep the rain and snow off the area's I am working on, with the surface's dry I can go back to the repair after the wind and rain have past on to soak someone else.

My own list.

Hi to all,

The list on my own Bedford has had to be put on hold due to weather apart from my handle starter bottom pulley dog which snapping off, which I managed to repair this morning and is now refitted.
The other jobs waiting to done need the weather to be dry, fat chance of that in this area at this time of year.
So the sooner Jason delivers his spares engine for me to take apart the better it should have been here yesterday but something went wrong and it did not arrive.

One job leads to another.

Hi to all,

While repairing the starter dog I found a hidden oil leak all be it a small one behind the bottom pulley where oil was able to seep past the sump pan rubber seal so a stich in time job was done to cure that.

Starting.

Hi to all,

Getting a break in the rain I managed to test the starter dog repair today and all is working as it should, engine started by hand on a low battery so that is what I set out to accomplish, well pleased!
But it looks like it will be some time before I can get drier days to get on with the rest of the outside work I need to do.
