batterys

ok so my batterys are dead gonna buy a new one or two and split them ...been looking and am totally confussed cos where ever i look and read it says something different SO totally confused im looking on here for advice AGAIN ..
A does any one have there wagon spit and if so what size batterys are you using
B whats the best one off BIG dual battery that i can use if i go for just the one battery .

any help would be great

If you use 12 volt power quite a lot in the living part of your van,you do need two batteries.But you need two different types.The living section or leisure battery should be a high amp-hour one whilst a starter battery should be a high cold cranking amp one.
I think both of mine were about £70 each in 2010/11.

well weve gone and got a numax 100 ah 900 crank so hopfully that should do ...there dual so ive got 2 with the option to get a solar panel some time in future.....the good thing is i can fit oth in my rack so can have them side by side .......cool looks like were of on a jolly for a day of deer spotting and a night of star gazing lol

You confusion, my dear Guy, is in the fact that you do not realise why the batteries (correct spelling Graham) are different. To explain,(listen closely, I say this only wunce), the battery that the starter motor requires is built to give all (or most)just to move everything on a cold day in January. High AMPS but not for long. The battery in your habitation area, (all not under the bonnet) needs to power the bulbs, and or the heater fan and such like for an extended period {hours?)and is designed to give less, but for longer.never the twain shall meet!! Do not charge the leisure battery at high amps. Do not expect your vehicle battery will get a charge for an hour and be fit for purpose. (24hrs recommended) The leisure battery can be connected via a specific charger so that is topped up whilst the mains are connected. Most high end vans are done like this. Means if your on a site with leccy hook-up, your internal systems should be good.

Any more info requires a stamped address envelope.

PS. higher volume batteries are better, but dearer. 75a/h for the motor, 150a/h for the van.

helloo hello bob many thanks old son
myself being a simple moaning old sod [ i dont believe it ] i read that to the long suffering wife and she said its all good and she understands so were all good here .
the one funny thing tho is we mesured the space for the 2 batteries which was great but we didnt think how we would get them into said space lolol so looks like i am going to have to take the step out fit in batteries and replace step oh well lol
any ways we fitted one of our new duel batteries and we had a lovely night in the new forest and a few cans of cider ....first jolly of this year

righto i thought id ask here to save starting a new thread but as its related i hope some one can give me MORE advice..
because we cocked up on the how to fit these new batteries im thinking of taking out the step and sliding them in and then replacing the said step shouldnt be too hard ah

Battery access.

Hi Guy,

Mine has a lift out floor access panel, cutting out the step seems a bit drastic, or do you only have access from underneath the van?

lol well ours is the same J but when we brought the batteries we did messure the rack BUT we didnt think how we would get the two batteries into said rack....i can get one dow2n but not the second so me thinks drastic is the way forward lol .i just dont want to compromise the stucture of the wagon

Battery rack.

Hi Guy.

Why not buy another battery rack and fit it further along the chassis and just use longer wiring to link the two batteries through the relay, you could make up with a bit of light angled steel.

I've got two standard batteries fitted parallel in the battery rack. They just fit and I have to move one slightly over to get the second in or out.
That way I always have loads of starting power even if we leave the 12V interior lights on all evening when not on a hook up on a campsite.
The standard charging system and the hook up panel work really well even for 30 years old and I've never flattened them.
Mind you we only ever have one light on to have it nice and cosy. Cooking etc is all on gas anyway if we're not hooked up.
During the winter I left a slow charger on for a few days every month to keep them topped up.

hi there Frank ....the thing is old son we did all the measurments BUT didnt think how to get them through the gap lol in some strange way it was a good thing cos i took out the box that was on the tray and the tray was abit rotten so if we had been able to put both batterys done there they would have fallen through ...any ways thats been done today but im gonna have to cut a bigger hole lol .

Small twelves.

Hi Guy,

I have two batteries on my van a large heavy duty and a very neat cctv. 12volt linked in through a booster switch in case the juice runs low, it is also wired up to feed the tv.

well ive set my mind to it now ..when its a bit nicer [ i hate working out in cold lol ] im gonna cut a bigger hole its a shame but ive got to do it then ill have two big duel battterys but ill just have to be careful so i dont muck up the step ..ive had another look today and it look possible ..but time will tell.

Hi Guy,

Everything is possible I was told you could not make space to make use of a starting handle, and where would you get one in todays world, when cars can start and drive themselves.
But there was room and I made a starting hand and a bottom pulley dog and it works just fine!
As I am sure your battery carrying changes will work just fine!

im gonna wait shes all ready and going so ive a spare battery sitting in the lounge lol .....so its a luxury really and truly but i will get it done ....need to save some money so i can get her a good service and im hoping that ill be able to do that in june when she goes for MOT which i reckon she should pass hence the mone ive save for that ill put to a service ....sounds like a plan ah

Batteries.

Hi Guy,

I bought a smart relay online for just over fifteen pounds and water proof inline fuse holders which come with enough wire attached of the correct grade to reach between the two batteries and connect them through the relay, the only thing I had to add was an earth wire.
That small split charge system should mean that the booster battery is always topped and ready if needed.
