Bedford work brought to a halt.

Hi to all,

My Grandson's Vauxhall Corsa broken-down on the M9 in the dark and the rain, towed him home on a rope and today recovery truck brought it to my house, low on engine oil and very low on coolant so plugs out and all cylinders are full of coolant.
So I wonder what I will be doing from the next few days, his question when will it be fixed and how much will it cost!!!

Really hot stuff.

Hi to all,

The Corsa engine strip down is going slowly because everything has been that hot the hoses are glued into place and the cam-box cover being plastic is welded to the alloy cylinder head just by the shear heat that this engine must have reached before finally the head gasket gave out.
The next question has to be has this level of heat been enough to crack the head, if I ever get the head off I will let you know!

Corsa engine strip down.

Hi to all,

A lot of parts to be removed before that Corsa cylinder head can be taken off but some progress has been made today between showers of hailstones, might have it off and away to the machine shop by Monday afternoon.
The valves might still be bent because on sixteen valve heads like this one they are very slim sodium filled stemmed valves, because water cannot be compressed any valve that was open when the head gasket blow happened the pressure may have been enough to bend the stems just behind the head of the valve.
So until it is off we will not know how much damage has been done, could be a very expensive lesson about not paying any attention to dash-board warning lights.

Or just plain old lack of maintenance on your grandsons part?
As an ex trucker we were always told to check the fluids every morning. If we didn't & something happened as a result,it was instant dismissal.

Hi bluebedouin,

At twenty two years old I would use a much shorter word "lazy".

Corsa.

Hi to all,

Well at last the engine is striped of the engine end casing and the cylinder head are off, at least four exhaust valves are bent and maybe more and once all the valves are out I will check the inlets as well.
If the full set of valves are needed it will cost £114.00 for a full set, the head set we have already bought at £100.00 plus oil and anti-freeze and oil filter at £150.00, plus the recovery at £150.00.
The cylinder head will need to be skimmed and checked for any cracking, if all is well that will cost him £80.00, "laziness is very expensive".

A costly afair.

Hi to all,

The Corsa work looks like being a costly lesson for the young man who failed to stop when the temperature light and engine fault light came on, some of the valves have been damaged but to make sure of a complete and successful repair the full set of sixteen valves will have to be replaced.
Without any labour charge from me he will be looking at over £600.00 pounds in parts and machine shop work "ouch" that is a sore one.

Machine work.

Hi to all,

The Corsa cylinder head is now in the engineering shop to be skimmed and have a full set of new valves fitted, it will need quite a lot of alloy skimmed off to clean up and level the head surface, maybe as much as 15 thou.
I should get it back in a couple of days and the gasket set is here ready to start putting it all back together and resetting the valve timing.
The total cost to number one Grandson comes out at £681.00 about which he is not pleased but if he was to add the labour costs and then the increased VAT
I think he would ready have something to moan about, approx. £1500.00.

Corsa head.

Hi to all,

At four o'clock yesterday I got the Corsa cylinder head back from the engineers, the damage was such that they had to take the maximum mount of metal off the surface before it would clean up and remove all the pitting in the alloy.
Normally they just need a light skim of about ten to twelve thou. but they said they have had to take off twenty thou. and that is very close to the inlet vale heads, so getting it set up just right will have to be spot on.
So I will make a start at reassembly today and with a bit of luck it will all work out ok.

Corsa engine work.

Hi to all,

Finally got the Corsa back in one piece if it starts and runs ok then all will be well, done every test and check I can think of prier to starting it up but a doctors visit to my other half kind of stopped any further work being done.
But tomorrow is another day I might risk a test start up, hoping that all the hand turning will have primed up the oil fed cam-followers so that the valves operate as they should.

Corsa

Hi to all,

The shimmed head and new valves work has been a waste of time and money because the head is damaged beyond repair or use, so it is to be a new cylinder head at the princely cost of £1000.00 pounds.
I offered to shop around for a second-hand head but I was told it would be getting a new head, and all because of a failure to check coolant and oil levels, let's hope the head is the only damage caused.

Second strip down.

Hi to all,

Made a start to the strip down this afternoon mainly just to confirm that the engine locked back in the correct place and all my own marks also lined up and they all did so it looks like the amount the machine shop skimmed off to get out all the pitting and burning has been just too much metal off the head.
And so reducing the clearance between inlet valves the pistons just too much, another factor is that at that high temperature the valve springs had weakened enough to reduce there closing power.
I will know more once the head back off the block and on the bench.

Corsa problems.

Hi to all,

The new cylinder head for the Corsa will be here on Tuesday, the old one is back off and striped ready for the exchange, and all for the price of a few pints of coolant.

Corsa heat damage.

Hi to all,

My young Grandson says he wants to be here to help put his Corsa engine back together, it might help him to understand the need to check coolant and oil levels regularly and not to drive at eighty MPH while wondering what that light flashing in his face off the dash-board for!
He asked will it be back together by lunch-time, I said yes it will but did not say which lunch-time or on what day!

The new head.

Hi to all,

The new head arrived today for the Corsa 1.2 and has now had the lifters and followers and cam-shafts fitted, so it is ready to refit onto the engine block as soon as time will allow.
A lot on my mine right now so it as slipped down my list a fair bit!

Corsa time.

Hi to all,

Since I now have all the parts needed for the Corsa I have spent the day working on it to try and get it back on the road, built the new head up and refitted it today a total of seven hours work.
This time it has some compression even just turning it by hand so let's hope all will good to go tomorrow after a few final checks.
