That damp smell.

Hi to all,

The after leak treatment began today with the removal of a small section of the campervan ceiling because of a damp smell being parked up and closed up, but the plywood behind the ceiling felt wet a bit further back than I expected.
So a bit more had to be removed until I had reached the centre skylight in the middle of the van, by which time half the ceiling was down and the damp water soaked plywood was removed.
Nothing new there then small inspection job turns into a major operation which has now left the area exposed to make sure it is all dried out before any reconstruction takes place.

Drying out.

Hi to all,

With the old damp plywood removed the drying out process has begun, only two pieces of wood being replaced in the skylight frame the rest of the timber frame is in good shape.
The main cause of the damp smell has been the plywood lining so that has now all been striped out long with the old ceiling which someone had just covered over with the white plastic ceiling sections.
Tomorrow maybe a bit of heating to speed up the process before putting it all back together.

Scew holes.

Hi Jim,

Some clever soul has drilled holes in the wrong place when fitting the skylight and just left them, eight small holes but water is just able to drip very slowly through four of them and lay soaking into the plywood roof lining.
Hence the damp smell and because the ceiling was plastic and sealed all around the edges it stayed there and just soaked into the timber.
Once it is repaired I will add some more side roof vents because the front ones have been a success.
This job is helping to keep me sane at the moment like and escape from reality.

Hi to all,

Since it is June month and we up here can normally count on rain but because I would like a good heavy down pour just to test my drip repair it has stopped!
The forecast was for heavy rain and they are normally right about rain they only tell lies about the sunshine, just when you think you have worked out their errors!

Cieling refit.

Hi to all,

With the dampness eradicated and the ceiling back in place I hope that is the end of that problem, but on this old Bed-shed I doubt there will be much time before the next bit falls off or stops working.

Sky-light innovation.

Hi to all,

During the repairs to the front sky-light I created a hood at the hindge end and it has worked in that it diverts water over the top of the sky-light instead of allowing it to build up in front of the raised plastic frame, carrying any water across the top.
And I think I will be doing the same with this sky-light because it has worked so well in deflecting heavy rain water, but at the moment giving it time to dry out now that the ceiling has been renovated.

Testing testing.

Hi to all,

My roof work is being well and truly tested tonight with endless summer rain so I should have a verdict by morning on wither I have more dampness or has it stayed dry, I shall know tomorrow.

Dampness eradicated.

Hi to all,

The dampness and smell have at last been eradicated from my old Bedford, it meant the whole ceiling coming down to see how bad it was as the old ceiling had still been left in place and was acting like sponge.
So a lot of soggy ply wood later we are reinsulated with the plastic panelled ceiling back in place after a long period drying out and airing to get rid of that smell.
