Seldom simple.

Hi to all,

Upgrading is seldom a simple process but when you try fitting parts that had a previous life before you gained owner-ship it can make your life difficult.
The part I am about to try and change has been much messed about with by the previous owner in his attempt to make it fit his Bedford and what he seen as a suitable adaption makes me wonder how it did not fall off on the road.
So what I thought was going to be a straight forward gearbox out and gearbox in is not how it is going to be at all due to mounts that don't line up and threaded holes that don't have any thread left in them.
There are bolts that are far too long for the job they are meant to do with so many washers and spacers they must have reduced ground clearance, I can see this upgrade to an overdrive gearbox is going to take a while.

Hi Mike,

I will let you know how it all goes and more importantly if it works once it is fitted.

Got the job started.

Hi to all,

Yesterday all that I got done was to get the van moved and jacked up safely then getting the prop-shaft unbolted from the diff, today we had visitors to see Margaret so I sloped off and got a bit more done.
Prop-shaft centre mount off and prop off gearbox unbolted from the cross-member clutch cable and release arm off and the four bolts holding the gearbox onto the bel-housing out, free off the cross member to chassis bolts.
So just the speedo cable and the gearstick and the gearbox will be on the deck, had to repair the spring fork that holds the release arm in place inside the bel-housing, so things are moving along.
I have one problem to overcome on the overdrive gearbox, it has a different speedo drive connection to the cable but I will think of something!!

Gearbox.

Hi to all,

Sage one of the upgrade is done the gearbox is out and on the bench, working perfectly but I will give it a check-over just to make sure and then it will be a standby box.
The overdrive gearbox is in underneath the van but as yet not slotted into place, it is about twice the weight of the four speed box so some interesting ways of raising up to the right level will have to be used.
Like a sling down through the gear-stick hole in the floor and a jack from underneath with a number of blocks of wood should do the trick, it has done before!
Rain stopped play but tomorrow is another day.

Gearbox.

Hi to all,

Some changes had to be made to the cross-member and rubber mount and a change of thrust bearing, the spring clip on the clutch release arm had to be repaired and bolts put into place with lock-tight because of worn threads.
Just what you expect when you are working with old and second-hand parts.

Overdrive gearbox.

Hi to all,

The overdrive gearbox is now fitted into my old Bedford with the prop-shaft in place with a new centre mounting, clutch set up and adjusted so tomorrow it just needs gear-oil filled and the gear-stick fitted.
The only thing left to be worked out is the speedo-cable connection to the tail-shaft, its about seven inches too short but we shall find a way.
Let's hope it all work like it should and give's more mile's to the gallon!

Gearbox upgrade.

Hi Mike,

Well got all of the silly bits done today apart from the speedo cable which fully freed off is still an inch too short to plug into the tail-shaft, the only movement the van made today was to return it to its normal parking position at the front of the house, so first and reveres works ok.
But filled with new clean gear-oil and the solenoid for the over-drive was wired up and clicking so the next step is to get it out on the road for a test drive.
And I will let you know when I get that done and how things went, what worked and what don't.

Gearbox upgrade.

Hi to all,

Well todays test drive went well until I lost the electric's connection to the overdrive solenoid but it turned out be a fuse that was to light weight to coupe with the job, on the second test drive I lost the solenoid connection again but this time it was a bad joint in the wiring, great fun!
Solenoid now working but oil level in the overdrive too low so had to top up to level, I will give it another test drive tomorrow and hope that all the faults are gone.

Hello Doujoy.
Would re-routing your speedo cable to inside the cab from the speedo head connection to where the bulkhead and the floor join, drilling a hole and using a coned grommet win you enough slack, assuming you can keep it away from the pedals etc.

Gearbox upgrade.

Hi to all,

The test drive this morning was much more pleasing with the overdrive working like it should and the exhaust rattle cured, but still another vibration cutting in on deceleration which turned out to be the stabiliser bar from the gearbox rubber mount out and onto the cross-member.
So some adjustments had to be made to eliminate that and lock the bar down onto the cross-member and compress the rubbers, so with a bit of luck the old Bedford should now be fit for the road again.
Fourth gear through the overdrive is quite a bit higher so should give me three to five miles more to the gallon, the next long run will be interesting.

Gearbox upgrade.

Hi to all,

Now that all is working gear wise I need a visit to a breakers yard to see if I can pick up a suitable speedo-cable from which to make an extension that will reach the tail-shaft and get that speedo working again.

Speedo cable extension.

Hi to all,

In the process of making up an extension for my speedo cable from a second-hand Mini one, attempt one is ready for testing but heavy rain stopped play.

Speedo cable.

Hi to all,

My make-shift speedo cable extension does work but being a plastic coupling to make the joint I don't know how long it will last, I think I might have to come up with a stronger metal one.

Propshaft alinement.

Hi to all,

After another run around in my Bedford I feel that the prop-shaft might need a slight adjustment in height or distance from the floor of the motor, not easy to see when you are just laid on the ground with your head pressed against the floor of the van.
Tomorrow I might get the chance to jack up the rear end and get a better look at what needs to be done.
