bedford 2.3 diesel piston rings

Hello my name is chris i am new to the site but not a new owner of my bedford cf2 2.3d 1984 . my beddie has sat still for 4 years but yesterday i put a new battery in her and fired her up , as im going to attempt to tackle all the rust on wheel archers and restore her . started up ok with a bit of easy start but the blue smoke was was awful , its fine on idle but when you rev it hard even after warming up blue smoke bellows out . Am i right in saying this is piston rings or is there something else it could be ? I have checked the breather pipe on the rocker cover it seems fine . also im stuggling to find any piston rings for this vehicle where is everybody getting there parts from ? also could the tappet adjustment being incorrect cause this much smoke ? thanks in advance chris

Gummed up.

Hi Chris,

After standing for that length of time the piston rings will have become stuck in the lands of the pistons allowing oil to pass on the down stroke instead of wiping the oil off of the bore and drawing it back into the sump.
The other problem will be that oil laying in the cam-box will have had time to collect behind the valves and on start up would be burnt off in the combustion chambers.
If you can squirt some Redex down each plug hole and leave it to stand for a day or two it might be enough to free off the rings, when you restart after that time you will see smoke like never before but keep it running and let it burn off the Redex.

Was it old fuel?I wouldn't think that would help.

Ok I have bought a diesel compression tester gunna do a test tommoro to find out if rings are stuck or a problem with head . Only trouble is what is normal compression for a diesel engine this size . I can't find a haynes manual for the diesel motor . Can anyone tell me what the minimum compression should be ?

Hello Chris. I have checked in my diesel data and the ratio for the Brava 2.3 diesel late 80s engine is shown at 23 to 1 which is about 350. The other GM units they list are all around 20 to 23 to 1. When you got the van 4 years ago and it was running ok then as earlier replies could be the rings. Have you made sure that the crankcase is definitely venting properly. No one way valves stuck anywhere? Some people use a 50/50 mix of ATF and acetone to soak piston in bores for penetration. Try a few heat cycles running up to temp then allowing to cool.

Regards Andy

Compressions.

Hi Cris,

There it nothing wrong with those readings but you should give a good run to clear out all the oil that has been left, and diesel in excess could be your smoke problem, it is running too well to be anything too serous.
Breather valves and pipes might be worth a look or pump settings giving excess fuel.

Thanks for replying everyone most helpful everyone says check breather pipe I guess that's the one going from head to air filter inlet . I did check this and there is oil inside this pipe but cant see whyou oil is in there . Now you mention oil breather valve ? Where do I find this valve ? What does it look like . Thanks in advance

Crankcase.

Hi Chris,

Some of these older diesel's had a crankcase breather mostly on the opposite side of the crankcase from the starter motor, but on some it was just through the hose you have already checked.
Some injector cleaner put into the fuel might help clean out the pump, is the smoke smelling of oil or just excess diesel fuel?
