My next trip.

Hi to all,

Kelso is the next journey south to border country and the Kelso classic rally in spring-field park beside the river Tweed and just a short walk from the town centre and old gobbled streets and squares.
On my last visit to this rally it snowed on the Saturday so I hope to get better weather on this visit, making up my list of required bits and pieces in the hope of picking up some useful and needed stuff.

Checking gas supplies.

Hi to all,

I did some checking of what gas I had on board my old Bedford today prior to my next trip down to the borders country and the Kelso rally, have to top-up the water tank and fuel before setting off.
And for the first time in seven years I have taken out recovery through the RAC, just to be safe getting a bit too old for road-side repairs, always trusting that it is repair-able at the road-side!

Kelso on Friday.

Hi to all,

Today was fuel up day ready for the weekend journey, around trip of about 230 miles so everything has to be checked and then the van stocked with food to help keep the costs down.
By filling up the double tanks I normally get back home with half tank to spare and not having to pay higher pump prices than I do here, on rebuilt gearboxes to be transported this time so the load will be lighter, just the weight of tools and spares that I always carry.
Journey time is not important but like most people I hate to waste time and fuel held up in long traffic jams, quite often because it seems a set of traffic lights do not have the correct shade of green (people who sit looking up at a green light for two minutes trying to find a gear.

Road travel Friday.

Hi o all,

I think I have thought of everything for my trip tomorrow to the rally but what I don't have I will do without, hope to get away about ten in the morning and take a nice easy slow journey down to Kelso.
If the weather is anything like today it will be a pleasure, a stop off for a lunch break once I have got off the Edinburgh by-pass and arrive there sometime in the afternoon to find a nice corner to setup and have a beer or maybe two.

Back from Kelso.

Hi to all,

A good productive weekend at Kelso met a few old friends and made few new one's plus I bought some work-ware and a trailer board for my newly acquired 6X4 trailer, also picked up a spare magneto for that old Ransome crawler tractor.
Fuel was a hundred and fifteen miles each way so I think just on the five gallons each way, so not too bad for an engine that has over one hundred thousand miles under its belt!
The next one is down the same road but not quite as far a Thirlestane castle on the third of June so I will need to write up a list of what is required or to be searched for at that one.

Average mileage.

Hi to all,

With motorway for forty five miles and A class roads for fifty miles the average mileage works out at 23 miles per gallon, with some driving around the Kelso rally site so not too bad when I consider the weight of all the stuff I carry in that old Bedford.

Prepared for the next one.

Hi to all,

Yesterdays checks and top-ups were done ready for the next trip down the A68 to Thirlestane castle rally on the 2nd of June.
As a measure of fuel difference since fitting the over-drive gearbox was fitted I normally get back from that Kelso run with half a tank of fuel left, on this trip I returned with one whole tank full.
So that is quite a big improvement and to some extent due to gear selection and road speed, not staying in overdrive to a point where the engine is labouring hard.
The A68 through Louder-dale has a number of long hard climbs with slow-lanes to allow the powerful and super fast to fly on their merry way, until the next village speed limit and you find them just in front of you!

Moffat rally.

Hi to all,

Paperwork came in today for the Root-group rally in Moffat later this June, on my last visit there the auto-jumble was not so good as the other rallies mostly new stuff being sold.
But still a good weekend being close to the town and a lot of good Hillman restored vehicles from the fifties and sixties, and three or four Bedford's.

Hitting the road tomorrow.

Hi to all,

Setting off for Louder and the Thirlestane classic rally in the morning, rain forecast for the weekend so the willies are in the van along with an ample supply of food and CD's in case it stays on too long, I hope not or it will spoil a great turn-out of classic's.

Home early.

Hi o all,

A change of policy at Thirlestane rally in so much as they decided once we were all on site that there would a campsite fee for all including those showing a vehicle of any kind, as for campervans you could show free of charge as long as you did not sleep in the camper on site.
The choice was pay up or leave so I left at 20.45 and arrived home at 22.45 having told them I would not be back and to take my name off their mailing list, its a shame because it is a very good rally!

Moffat.

Hi to all,

The next Rally is at Moffat in two weeks time so let's hope they are not following the same model as Thirlestane!

The Moffat trip.

Hi to all,

In view of the new trend to charge a camping fee at some of the rallies I will travel to Moffat on the Saturday morning that way I will only stay the one night and travel back up the road on the Sunday evening.
I think quite a few others will be doing the same, apart from that the Moffat rally always seems to be a wet one.

Moffat rally.

Hi to all,

The rally at Moffat is on the 24th of June but for this one there is a charge and always has been, clearly stated in their paperwork.
But I will reduce this rally stay to just one night mainly because it is a very low laying and wet site and they allow too much movement of vehicles around the site on the Saturday which creates mud, in which I have been stuck before and had to be towed out.
The weather over the last nine days will have turned the Moffat site into a drain off area from the roads surrounding it, so a check of the field before entry is the order of the day.

The Biggar Rally.

Hi to all,

The paperwork for the rally at Biggar has came in and again notice of a charge for camping is clearly stated, it is on the 12th of August which I will make a one night stopover, mainly due to the site and the resent weather.

Hi to all,

Filling up two tanks at a filling station makes you very unpopular with the slick chicks who are just in to put in a tenner's worth, so filling up on a Sunday morning nice and early gives you peace to get the job done without upsetting too many people.
That is me now ready for my trip south to Moffat rally, I will travel down via A9 M73 and M74 in-spite of a fifteen mile road-works just to avoid that Forth-road bridge crossing, the surface is now so rough it knocks hell out of the suspension.
The speed limit is down to forty MPH on the bridge but it is still too fast for the state of the surface, it was never built for the volume of traffic now using it.

I was working up that way a few months ago. I agree, that bridge is in a hell of a state. Looking at the new bridge it shouldn't be too long before you can cross the Forth in comfort again.

Pre travel checks.

Hi to all,

Got most of my pre-travel checks done, each time I am about to go off on my journey's I like to go over all the basic stuff like lights tyres fuel and oil levels so least before hitting the road everything is working as it should.
This does not prevent breakdowns because with a motor as old as mine anything is possible but I do carry a number of spare parts, mainly because you will not be able to get them off over the counter.
But touch wood all will be ok for the Moffat rally journey's!
