Oil pressure
Hey guys!
Another issue with my Beddie:
The guys in the garage put the engine back together and in the van.
IT´S ALIVE!! That was the good part so far.
Before the lads could get it up and running a problem with the oil pressure turned up.
The mechanic reckons it´s the oil pump as there is oil pressure for five to ten minutes, then the oil lights flash and the oil pressure is gone.
I bought a NOS oil pump which is "brandnew"/never used.
When they put oil in the pump to float it on the bench and put it back in it was working again for another five to ten minutes.
Then the warning lights appear again.
We agreed to give it a go with the old oil pump, just to see if its really the new one what is causing the problems.
Then I heard that the oil pressure is not generated in the pump, and that only the interface with the crankshaft and bearings does this.
The pump is just moving the pressured oil around in the engine.
I´m not sure if thats right.
My mechanic said it could also be a stuck valve inside the oil pump as it laid for ages in a shelf. Isn´t there another valve in the oil filter?
Do you guys have an idea what the problem could be.
Thanks in advance (even for reading this)!
(Just to say this: I don´t have my Haynes manual here as it is with the van in the garage.)
Cheers!
David

An old problem with new oil pumps.
Hi Beds-Bedfords,
A problem that used to quite common on older engine's after a rebuild and a new oil pump was a failure of the oil pump to pick up and hold pressure, we used a white soft grease which was packed into the oil pump before fitting it which increased the pickup speed.
Oil pressure is in-fact a back pressure from the crank-shaft and galleries all the way up to the cam-shaft, on the Bedford slant four engine you have a pick-pipe of about fifteen inches from the sump before the oil can reach the pump its self.
Another thing to check on the Bedford oil pump is the O-ring seals are correctly fitted where the pump slots into the oil-way in the block, if these are the wrong size or as I have found in the past not fitted at all then you get no oil pressure.
If oil pump block holes are dirty the oil will get past these seals and you will lose oil pressure, I use an oil filter with a non-return valve in it which listed for a Renault master van mark one which help to reduce the oil pick-up time.
