Oil pressure lag and o rings

Hello. I am having problems with a delay in oil pressure building again so have decided to replace all the o rings involved with the pump and pan pickup.
There is an o ring in the sump gasket set for the pickup but what size o rings do I need for the oil pump itself. I used some from an o ring selection box when I fitted the pump last year which are metric. Is there a specific size I should use?. Is it feasible to use rtv above the o ring to ensure a good seal. I am also changing to a fram filter and possibly from 20/50 to 15/40 oil. Also fitting a oil guage.

Regards Andy

All good stuff.

Hi Beigebengy,

All work I have already carried out on my own Bedford engine and oil pump, it was metric sized O-rings that I used one that was a neat fit into the oil pump seal land and another that went over and came against the underside of the pump body which made it a very tight fit into the block casting.
I only used some white grease as a sealant and to make it easy to refit the pump without damage to the seals, I found that the lighter engine oil did not help these engine's were not built with modern oils in mind.

O ring quality?

I thought I would start at the top and work down so I removed the pump. Looked in the block and both ports were full of oil. This was 2 days since last run so if it was draining back I would not expect that.Pump seals looked ok but when I removed them they both broke when trying to stretch them over the pipes with my hooky thing. Both seals seemed brittle. These were from my o ring set which I got from a local autofactor. Checked the pump and rotor clearance appeared around 4 thou so cleaned an reassembled using O rings from my set again. On start up oil light out within 2 seconds.. Hoorah... I suspect these O rings sets are made in China and I will be renewing them again next year. I have noticed that wiper blades are failing quicker than they used to as well. Something missing in the mix perhaps............ Anyone know where I can buy some O rings that are not from China and will last .

O rings replaced again.

As last year started to struggle with oil pick up. I have replaced the o rings this time with a pair from an old Draper o seals box set from my local garage. Hopefully these will last a bit longer than the orange box crap yingtong seals.

Double O-Rings.

Hi Beigebengy,

I solved that problem by replacing the O-rings and also fitting two over onto the casing behind the O-rings with some grease.
Then I pressed some light grease into the pump pickup and turned it by hand before refitting.
