Engine swop

Hi peeps I've got a Bedford cf2 autosleeper ,2.3 petrol 1982 I know they're renound for steady plodding but it's going slower than a plod won't go above 45 mph on the motorway and when it gets to any incline it is just embarrassing and usually runs out of steam in every gear ,it even just stopped on one hill in Pembroke (wasn't fuel starvation )resulting having to roll back and turn round and find alternate route, I'm not wanting to turn it into a racing bus but at least be able to do 60mph,I've give it a service fitted electric ignition ,cone air filter it's had cam belt changed etc so it's not due to lack of maintenance, I'm looking to change the engine I've seen various threads with transit engines etc , I was wondering if anyone had fitted a Vauxhall omega engine and box , there seems to be a few about petrol and diesel , also any thoughts on a jaguar x type engine as whole cars can be had for a few hundred , I don't want to give up with the van as everything else with it is great

Hi Trucker gav,

I think I would start with a compression test just to get some idea of what state the pistons and valves are in, does it have the Opel engine or the slant four Vauxhall/Bedford engine?
One guy I know has been very successful in changing from petrol to a diesel out of a Frontera with turbo and that seems to have given his campervan a new lease of life.
And another guy who went for the Ford Pinto engine and five speed type nine gearbox to gain better power and lower fuel costs.
To change the engine you have to take a long look at the space you have to work with, and remember that the cab is classed as part of the chassis on the Bedford CF.
