power steering

Hi All.
Have just taken my van for m.o.t will pass with minor adjustments.
They were all raving on how good a condition it is in.
I have tried to sell it a couple of times because of heavy steering(i have a muscle problem).
They said try to get electric power steering added.Does anyone have any ideas where to get it.

Electric power steering.

Hi Stuart,

I know of a couple of guy's who have had power steering fitted to their Bedford CF and it seems one of the most adaptable is the one used in the Vauxhall Corsa, and I think if you go into previously asked questions section you may well find more info on this conversion.

Hi Stuart

It may be worth you giving this lot a ring http://www.talbot-express-power-steering-conversions.co.uk It's £600 for the conversion.

As a bity of lateral thinking here, before you spend hundreds of pounds..

The steering on my coachbuilt, short wheelbase Adventura is as light as a feather, easily driven with one finger once moving, a little heavier when parking but not massively so.

To put it in context the van steering is lighter than that of my BMW 530 touring (E39) with power steering.

I attribute a lot of this to the tyre pressures. I was advised by the tyre suppliers to run all 4 at 60PSI which I do, I have not noticed any downside to this in the form of grip in wet weather or such.

The front tyres fitted are humble van tyres by 'Lanvigator' and cost £130 fitted in 2015.

Hope the above is of some help.

Grease points.

Hi Stuart,

One thing I have done to my own Bedford CF steering rack is to have fitted two grease points and pumped in some very light grease, one at the pinion housing and another at the far end of the rack tube this might be enough to solve your problem.
I run my front tyres at 42 psi and the rear tyres at 51 psi and have quite a light steering even at parking speed, you should check that the steering coupling above the pinion housing is not partly seized.

hope this is some use, £100 sounds like a good price.

I have personally used the services mentioned, to fit power steering. I cannot do the physical part involved, so got the local garage to dismantle my steering. Send it to the U.K to be converted using Corsa `B` parts, then refitted again. the result was astonishing and well worth the cost--(her money anyway). Yes, the downside was a lack of feel in the steering ,which meant that main road and motorways needed concentration, but small potatoes after the freedom, especially in car parks and pub parks. If you`ve the loot, go for it, as the chorus girl said to the Bishop

power steering

I fitted power steering to my CF using one from a Toyota Estima [the steering rack has to come from a vehicle where it is mounted in front of the front axle] the power steering pump came from a mitsubishi. It certainly works very well and i wouldn't be without it. The only disadvantage is some loss of steering lock but because it is so easy to spin the wheels around that that is not a problem if you have to take another bite at that 3 point turn, i run 30 psi in the front tyres as per the manual and 50 psi in the rear tyres.
