Maybe buying a Bedford CF tonight

At least I ‘think’ it’s a CF, it doesn’t say in the ad.

It’s 1983 2.3l petrol. What should I look out for? I’ve checked it’s MOT history and it all seems sound with no rust. It’s had an oil leak mentioned a couple of times on its mot history but not for the last two years.

What’s the fuel consumption like on them? Will it be cheaper to get a taxi? 😁

Welcome to the Bedford world.

Hi Hildergard,

Sounds like a Bedford in what you have said so far you have not said what the mileage is but if it is a 2.3 petrol mileage will depend a lot on what body it has, high top or pop-up roof as there is a weight and wind drag difference.
I have a high top 2.3 petrol and I get 21 miles to the gallon running at fifty miles per hour, when you take it for a drive check the gear change and noises and make sure you run it up a few hills to check the power drop.

Hi, I think I've worked out it's a Pioneer. It's done 96000 miles. It has the fibreglass roof.Is 21 mpg bad? My husband says it's awful but campers are heavy no?

Pioneer.

Hi Hildergard,

My own campervan is a Pioneer and older than the one you are buying but for the size of engine and weight of body 21 miles to the gallon is quite good, these Bedford's are not running on an engine built to modern speck but mine is well past the hundred thousand miles on the same engine.
With my overdrive gearbox I fitted last year I can get another three or four miles to the gallon on a long journey, mainly on the motorway but if you are looking for an economic campervan then you would have to be looking to buy much younger and most likely diesel.
Maybe you need to look at the rate of road tax for these campervans as well because last year twelve months road tax cost me £235.00 and insurance was £188.00 and recovery was £76.00 with the RAC, never had to use it but it is worth having.

Hi Hildergard

I don't think it's a Pioneer conversion. The windows are wrong and Pioneer didn't (as far as I'm aware) put side windows in the luton section. They normally had a single front window. I'm not sure who the coachbuilder was for you conversion but I will look into it. As for the fuel, 21mpg is about average for a coachbuilt. They are heavy, not exactly aerodynamic(!) and as Doug said, not built to modern spec.

Thanks Colin, I’ve bought it now and would love to know what model it is so I can get some manuals.

Hi
Manuals for the camper section are almost impossible to get. It doesn't match any of the brochures that are online. Have you got any more photos of your CF so I can try and work out who did the conversion? If you are after manuals for the van section then the old Haynes manual comes up quite regular on ebay. Did the person you bought it off tell you to use a lead additive whenever you fill up with petrol? The 2.3l hasn't got hardened valve seats so using unleaded can, over time, damage the cylinder head.

I think it used to have a front window above the cab but it’s been replaced by a solid panel. There is scant information on it in the papers that came with it but there is a bill for an aluminium panel so I’m assuming that’s it. Even with that though, as you say, it doesn’t match any images I can find online. It s a mystery right enough.

The previous owner didn’t mention anything about the fuel but I’ll look through the paperwork to see if I can see any record of adaptations being done to the valves. If not I’ll start using an additive I think. It needs a bit of work but nothing irredeemable and I think she’ll be a beauty when she’s received some love and care.
