Looking at our 1st CF - whine in 3rd gear?

Hi all.

I am off to checkout a CF at the weekend and the chap says it whines in third gear, he just jumps from 2nd to 4th.

Would this be of concern and any thoughts on where to start investigating?

Hmmm.Difficult one that. Now if it was in every gear,it would definitely be a female.(All campers are either male or female.)

Whine.

Hi amboid,

A whine in third is most likely to be coming off of the lay-shaft bearings, it goes away the fourth because fourth is a straight through drive and first second and third are through the lay-shaft.
So you have pressure on the lay-shaft bearings in all three of the lower gears
but the pressure is off in fourth gear, if the whine is in all four gears when you drive it is likely to be coming off the diff.

thanks for the replies all.
After driving it back, the whine is more of a banging.
Does that still sound like a bearing?
Is it a big fix?
Also, clutch feels pretty much gone, high bite point and feels & sounds like slipping when driving

Hi Iambold,

The clutch might need to be replaced but try to reset the adjustment first, if it is slipping you should be able to smell it burning.
The whine that is more of a banging sound could be coming off the prop-shaft a joint or loose bolts or centre-mount bearing.
