Time of year for an inside job.

Hi to all,

Since running out of Bedford gearbox work I have went back to repairing Landrover gearboxes, the old ser. one two and two A and ser. three, I had forgotten just how straight forward and robust they are.
Picking up this work though the vintage rallies where the older Landrovers are very common for restoring back to full working order.
Should keep me busy through the winter time, nice inside job!

Damage reveled.

Hi to all,

Revelled damage on striping down, third and fourth sincro hub is missing springs and the reverse idler gear is missing five teeth, third main-shaft gear has chipped teeth due to metal fragments in the oil.
Trans-mission brake expander seized, brake not working.

New equipment.

Hi to all,

Never thought I would be buying new equipment at this point I my retired life but the friendly garage that used to allow me to press out and in bearings has closed down so I have had to buy a twelve ton press for wheel-bearings and gearbox bearings, should a good investment it will earn its keep!
There are more Land-rover gearboxes coming my way.

New equipment.

Hi to all,

The new press arrived today and is now built up and in working order, it is only twelve ton but I think it should do the jobs that I have for it.
Tried it out on a gearbox main shaft bearing and it managed just fine so the next test for it will be a wheel-bearing off of the Clio ladies car at the weekend.

New arrivals.

Hi to all,

The latest arrivals are two Ford fiesta gearboxes both with different parts of the there casings broken, the plan is to swap the casings so that we have one service-able gearbox.

The search for parts.

Hi to all,

It seems that the old Land-rover parts suppliers are alive and well, a company called LR down in the midlands have all the parts I need to rebuild that ser,2 gearbox so I should have the parts by mid-week.

New equipment earnong its cost.

Hi to all,

The new press is proving to be a good investment in pressing out and in two Renault Clio front wheel-bearings, so quite pleased with that.
The down side is in getting the weather breaks to refit them, not the best time of year to be doing this type of outside work.
But the inside work continues once the parts arrive for the Land-rover gearboxes.

Old skills that save your sanity

Hi to all,

Land-rover gearbox rebuilds are like old skills that save your sanity during these grey winters days short on daylight and warmth, and if I am out in that workshop I save on the power bills for the house, way back in those tractor repairing days of the late sixties tractors always broke down in the middle of the frost covered field but the old guy I worked with back then would take his grease gun put some grease onto his hands then wipe it off that way your hands stay as warm as toast,(stopped you from picking your nose as well)!

More inside work.

Hi to all,

With Ford Fiesta and Land-rover gearboxes done the next inside job is inside the old Bedford making sure all the water is drained off and all the soft furnishing are removed and covers all washed and stored in the house ready for the new season.
January means the start of the real frost and no doubt our fair share of snow is just waiting in the wings, but just to keep me thinking I am going to adapt my engine crane for use inside my small workshop so that I can lift heavy stuff onto the bench more easily.
This will make more use of the crane which sits idle most of the time.

The press has paid for itself.

Hi to all,

The inside work is going well and that press is in use today replacing front wish-bone bushes for a VW transporter, in just two weeks it has paid for itself.

Hi Doug

It's always nice when a tool that you've bought gets used. I'm never keen on buying tools but the moment I go to the van and pull out the tool for the first time and it saves me a lot of work I realise why I buy them.

clearout to make space.

Hi Colin,

The other side of buying this press meant that I was forced to get rid of a lot of rubbish and scrap to make room for it, this continued since and now I have a much bigger workshop and even room to bring in my engine crane which makes lifting engines and gearboxes onto the bench easier.

The down side is that next week you'll find that you need some of that 'rubbish' that you chucked out
