While you're not doing anything with the transmission support it on/over a container so that the rest of the oil can drain out.

Slowly but surely, the strip down is going well.
Im definitely working slowly, but working on an old dresser in an overcrowded shed seems to add to the appeal. I cant help thinking that I need to build me a decent workshop which I can house my proper workbench in if I ever get it back! Im missing my big vice! (keep guessing)
Hopefully it wont be too long before I have everything done but Im not rushing!

Nice box by the look of the synchroniser dogs on the gears and condition of the reverse pinion teeth leading edges.

Condition of the countershaft where the needle rollers run usually is a good guide. If there's no damage then it hasn't done much work in the intermediate gears & chances are that the mainshaft spigot where it sits in needle rollers (or a caged roller bearing) inside the main drive pinion bore also will be fine.

Yes, I took the needle rollers out with the rings and put them in a container- the internal surfaces of the counteshaft are immaculate!

Just stripped off the 3mm foam insulation (as bragged about in the original brochure- not that it covers more than a miniscule part of the van) in readiness for more foil backed camping mats to be stuck on with spray carpet glue. Im wondering whether I should put the foil side on the inside or outside...

Anyway, exhaust arrived today but the main box is a different pattern.. Will QH S 2938 fit a 2.3 Petrol ok?

That one is for the 1.6 & 2.0 litre slant engines (& maybe also the Perkins diesel engines).

If the inlet & outlet pipes are the same diameters as on the elliptical silencer assembly then there shouldn't be any restriction to gas flow but from memory the outlet is smaller on the round silencer version - had to keep different tail pipes in stock when I mended CFs when they were in production.

Exhaust note will be different, probably noisier at some speeds because the effective exhaust length (gas flow path) is shorter.

Dimensions:
LENGTH : 2' 9 1/4"

LENGTH OB BOX : 1' 6"

LENGTH OF RESR. : 8"

INLET BORE : 1 3/4"

OUTLET BORE : 1 1/2"

As my tailpip is rotten thru I can find pipe to fit.

Do you think it will work ok?

1+3/4 inch inlet needs checking against the front pipe - I've got a feeling it should be 1+7/8 inch.

Youre right- dims supplied incorrect-1+7/8 inch it is then!

The only worry then is the outlet being under-size; if I remember rightly the elliptical silencer outlet is 1+7/8 inch bore (48mm clamp for the tailpipe against 45mm clamp with the round silencer).

Hmm. Are you thinking of side exit tailpipe perchance? It's how the Perkins engines pushed exhaust out with least back pressure: short side exit to the passenger side just behind the battery cradle.

Exacly what I was thinking Phil, partly due to the lenghth of the exhaust (my rearmost bracket has destroyed itslef twice now) but also because it would free up space and access for a possible LPG tank...

Do I detect that you are a little dubious about using this box?

All I'm dubious about is saying that it'll do - on a 2.3 slant it might work very well with a short tail pipe, it might not ...

Back pressure is a function of cross section area and length; at the same time total effective length of the system (gas path) influences noise level according to damping of shock waves travelling along the system.

Having a short tail pipe may overcome potential back pressure issues; it's likely to be fairly noisy at some engine speeds though.

Hmm. it was an opportune purchase, so I might keep it as club stock. I was intending to go down the SS route originally, but this looked like a cheaper shorter term option. Plenty of other jobs to get on with at the moment anyway, so a bit of exhaust bandage might eke the current one out for a bit longer!
Thanks again for the advice, Phil. If Id fitted it and not solved my problem, Id have been a bit miffed!

Roof insulation done- layered camping mats, carpet fitting glue and foil tape, hopefully it will partially address the oven/ fridge feeling. Only the wall behind the cooker to go!

Been a while since Ive been on, but grafting has been ongoing!

Fitted new panels inside, as the old ones had had it, but opted for hardboard painted with scrubbable anti germ paint. The reason I didnt go for vinyl clad hardboard is that I can patch up whenever my little tinkers get messy!

I fitted under cupboard spots, yet to be wired up and switched, and deep cleaned all the furniture units before reinstalling, having given all the bunk metalwork a new coat of paint.

Today I fitted a new SS exhaust I bought from ABC. Its the greatest extravagance Ive spent but on the grounds I wont need to do it again, (for which I am truly grateful- I found fitting it harder than anything else yet) I thought it made sense as the old one was developing holes faster than I could patch them. That said, if anyone thinks they might have a use for the old one, they can have it for nowt.

[/img]

I then set about applying the faithful Rustoleum, really a basecoat before mixing the colour I need, but please with results so far!
[/img]

You might notice the ding bottom centre- the corner bumper mount points show evidence of other encounters. Still never noticed it before, so not too fussed about addressing it now. Too nackered!

New exhaust hangers and straps fitted, because I dont want to lose my shiny new exhaust! Off to track down manifold studs n nuts, probably a gasket too. Not sure if I have a loose baffle on the new silencer box- will need to get the above done before I can know for certain!

Taking advantage of the good weather, Ive been abusing the rust in the front wheel arches. The fix for now is filler until I get my welding head on, also because Im well aware that Im still working on:
1. Timing Belt covers
2. Overdrive box.

That reminds me- Could anyone with a J type on a 4 speed box forward me details of what propshaft I need? Length etc...
