Afternoon all,

Arranging to have the 'new' Bedouin delivered to Gillingham soon - can't wait to get my teeth into it!!!

Vendor sent me some photos of the interior this morning........













The interior in the cream one, especially the cooker/sink unit, is in better condition than this one so we will probably either canibalise the cream one for good parts or make patterns of the furniture and re-make new.

Apparently, the cab metalwork is in reasonable nick on the blue one......

Had a call from the vendor - blue beddie will be delivered next week!!;]

Keep an eye open between Lowestoft and Gillingham (Dorset) for him floating along on a trailer

The work begins!!!!

So!!!

Van is now in the workshop and the fun begins!!!

Bonnet and grille removed after what seemed like gallons of penetrating fluid was used on the bolts.



RH headlight mounting panel - VERY rotten!!!

All I am doing at the moment is stripping all the rotten and unwanted panels and fittings out of the cab so as to get back to basic metal. Once all the crud has been removed, the engine and front axle will be removed....

More updates and photos tomorrow....

Day 2....

The strip continues:


Cab fittings removed (seats, boxes, seat belt stalks etc.)


Drivers seat box area showing rust holes...


Drivers footwell...


Passenger seat box area..


Passenger footwell...


Drivers step - not too bad actually!!!


Passenger step - cill gone as well as holes in the corner...


Rocker on passenger side..


Junction of cab with habitation unit - rusted through due to standing water in the past.

Managed to get the screen out eventually by cutting through the seal from the inside... Lower drivers side not too bad.


Lower central portion a little worse....


Lower passenger side has a few holes!!!


Upper screen rail is fine!!!!!!!

That was it for the weekend. Getting the screen out was a palava: the manual says to use a flat blade to ease the seal over the frame from the inside...impossible with a hard, old seal!!! Just cutting along the edge with a vary sharp knife (careful!!!) meant that the screen could be gently eased forward out of the opening.

Next job is to remove the steering column, instrument housing, seat belts, doors and all under-dash paraphanalia. This will allow me to go over the whole cab de-rusting and treating, in preparation for engine and front axle removal.

I want to get the whole cab and chassis to a stage where all the welding can take place at once...

When you tried to remove the screen rubber out did you remove the plastic insert on the out side??
This is there not just as a decorative trim but also to expand the rubber so the screen cant fall out

Likewise - early CF's (like ours) didnt have insert trims. In my case, the rubber was SO hard (and brittle) that it wouldnt flex. Coupled with the amount of 'sealant' used around it, it was just NOT going to come out 'by the book'!!

It is where the 'T' key sits (with a square drive) which opens the gas locker on the nearside just behind the passenger cab door.....AND MINE IS MISSING:C

If anyone has a spare kicking about they do not need (or comes across one on their travels)??????

I know it is an obvious thing to say, as most models will tend to rot out in the same places due to manufacturing factors or type of use etc. but (and don't take this the wrong way Carl) it is good to see other (in this case vans) with all the same problems you have! It is the 'you are not alone' factor. Spurs you on I think. Although it is now dark, pitch black and freezing cold so I think I'll just have this evening off.......

Was hoping to get into the workshop tonight - however it is peeing down outside, and I have to walk 200m to get there!!! I know it isnt that far, but it REALLY is persisting down out there:o

This weekend, we are off to Lowestoft to pull the blue bedouin apart (the one we bought off ebay a few months ago). Unfortunately, we cannot save him as the chassis is broken through rot - very unusual - and it is just not cost effective to repair.

So we are taking our motorhome up to the yard with a full box of tools to strip every last usable part off him that we can fit into the van - all, that is, except 'oily bits' (engine, gearbox etc.) as Flo has drawn the line on allowing those into the motorhome!!!!!:#

We hope the blog will be of interest to others with similar problems with their vans..........

Unfortunately, the Bedouin body cannot be lifted whole from the chassis (unlike the Autohome that was on your chassis) in one piece - it would need to end up being completely rebuilt from scratch.....and I think that MAYBE I nearly have that scenario already!!!!:#

Whilst I am gutted that I cannot save this very early one - at least many parts will be donated toward the cream one to get him sorted.

HOWEVER - if you are not averse to the idea (and will still have the chassis in the new year), I would like to float the idea of cutting out some of the roof gutter and windscreen surround from your chassis to patch repair ours and maybe some other metalwork that may be of some use???????

Day 3....

After last weekend's trip to Lowestoft to pull all we could of the old blue Bedouin, I managed to get into the workshop again today to carry on the strip of the cab.........




Instrument binnacle, heater, trunking and stearing wheel all removed - only the wiper mechanism left now.


Surprisingly easy to get the gubbins off from here....labled the wires from the motor though - pound to a penny I would forget where they went if I didnt!!

It seems as though I have a few chassis problems at the front end.....





I think I had better get sme stout cardboard in.....will need it for templates for shaping and cutting metal.

A few areas of concern around the N/S headlight..



The top of the N/S wing doesnt look too clever either...




Still, Christmas is coming so I will treat myself to a decent mig welder and 'set to' in the new year....

In the meantime, the steering column, engine and front axle need to be removed.....and this will be the next installment,,,,soon!!!!

Wow Andy Capp you have your hands full with your cream colored Bedouin. Look forward to seeing its completion...as I,m sure you are as well.

Blimey, you do indeed have your work cut out! good luck with it, that is some serious welding required there. Mine is now moving about under it's own steam, but stil not 100% road worthey just yet - another weekend in bath needed!
