Landcruiser Restoration

Just bought a 1972 landcruiser found it locally been stood since 2002,This will be the third CF I have restored and this is the type I have been after for a long time,When I got through the nettles etc which were nearly as high as the van to my amazement I found the van to be in in resonably good order it looks like it has had new wings and rockers at some time they are in realy good nick chassie looks okay, the only thing that is realy bad are the door bottoms can you get bottom sections or have I to get them fabricated as the rest of the doors are okay,Not to sure how to upload photos will have to find out to show how the retoration goes.

Good luck with the resto Paul.
Apparently you have to put the photos on 'photobucket' or some such site and then link them from there to your blog. Mind, I am NO expert on this as you can tell from my blog - but I am sure that someone more knowledgable will be along soon to explain better.

Regarding the doors, I had an email reply from Adrian Baily Classics about them - he has some new/old stock at £245 EACH!!!!!! yikes!!!

Look forward to reading more about the resto as it moves along........
regards
Carl

CF Doors

Thanks Carl,Will be cheaper to fabricate new bottom sections and weld them in, Adrian prices are very strange some parts are very expensive and others you would think are going to cost a fortune are cheap.

Hi Paul-
sounds like your project is very similar to mine- Ive got a '73 Landcruiser called 'Moby'-
http://www.bedford-cf.co.uk/mboard/thread.php?id=7403
Similar problem with doors, but Ive just bought a pair of CF2 doors of ebay for 70 quid the pair which are in great nick- by all accounts from the received wisdom on this site, they will fit- will let you know how I get on!8)
Looking forward to seeing your pictures- photobucket indeed works well!
Regards
Mike

Landcruiser Update

Progress

The van has been striped down to the shell every nut and bolt removed, all glass removed to replace all rubber seals etc also makes it easier for spraying.

Suspension front and back removed for refurbishment new bushes bearings etc.
The nearside wishbones were not to good and needed replacing I had a new top one with bushes and ball joint ex mod (ebay £10,) couple of years ago,Managed to get a lower one with nearly new bushes again £10 ebay. The offside wishbones were OK just needed new bushes, the lower ones I had the top ones £80.00 the pair Adrian Bailey found replacing the bushes far easier with the wishbones off the vehicle the last ones I did were a right pig of a job on the vehicle.

The front suspension is back on the van, The rear is nearly there I damaged one of the bolts that holds the rear springs on so looking for a replacement.

I have made up all new brake pipes and have all new parts for the braking system.

The doors were rotted out along the lower and front edges cut all the rot out and fabricated new sections welded them in the same with the bonnet very little filling to the rest of the body where it needed filling I cut the rot out and welded new steel in only use filler to smooth up the grinding.

The chassis had 37 years of muck on it cleaned it back to bare metal gave it 3 coats of hammerite rust buster and two coats of underseal,
The worst bit of the chassis was under the passenger footwell not easy to get to so I cut the floor panel out made it a lot easier to get to made up a box section in good steel plate was a bit worried about this bit as it takes a serious ammount of load etc so I got the youngest son to check it for me him being a welder and fabricator good job he said dont usually use 1/4 plate though.

While the cold weather has slowed down the the major works I have completly striped down all the wiring harness and renewed the best part of it,it is unbelievable the bodge ups some people do.

Taking the plywood rear flooring out is making work on the van a lot easier.

Still loads to do will work out how to get photos on here sometime.

Happy New Year Paul.
