Eastern european cops (2 stories)

Back in 2006 at our first trip to Bulgaria, it was very late at night, like 1 or 2 am and we were driving on this pitch black road in southern Serbia. I was on the wheel, my mate and the girls were asleep. I must have been driving for some hours and was pretty tired, I wasn't paying much attention to the road (we were on a very very long, perfectly straight stretch of road) as i know it by heart and there was almost no traffic. Then, all of a sudden, these eerie lights appear out of nowhere and start dancing in the distance in front of me. At first I said to myself, having driven for a long time, "You are hallucinating". So i looked aside, rubbed my eyes, but the lights were still there and getting closer. Then i realized that i wasn't hallucinating but that it was a cop pulling me over. The revelation came by the time i actually saw the cop in the headlights. was standing right in front of the van and waving with a light-up rod of some kind. Barely managed to brake and not run him over. It scared the life out of me, imagining for a second what it must be like to run a cop over in Serbia.

Next day, we were in Bulgaria, and around noon it was very very hot. We were eager to get finally to our final destination (my parent's shower). Sweaty and happy, with the music loud, my mate (who is French) was driving and didn't slow down entering a village. So he passes at around 80kmh through the village and this cop jumps out and pulls us over. While we are stopping, i tell my mate, "Dont worry, just give him 10lv (5euro - standard corruption rate at the time, gone way up since ) and he'll let us go". So my mate, reassured, takes a 10lv bill, puts it halfway in his fotball shorts and jumps out of the van, barefoot (he likes driving barefoot), bare torso and with only football shorts with half a 10lv bill sticking out of them. Then he "greets" the cop, with a slang bulgarian greeting that he had learned earlier, which translated in English sounds like "Wazzup dude". Cop is in shock. I must say that the sight of the half naked frenchman jumping out of the bedford was memorable. So the cop becomes red and only shouts "GET THE HELL OUT OF MY SIGHT!!!!". We happily comply.

Another world.

Hi,

I have travelled a lot over Europe as a long distance driver for nine years, so I know what you mean when you say they just stand in the middle of the bloody road, in the dark!
I was stopped once in Hungry, at three in the morning, they said I had passed through their radar at 75mph and the limit was 50mph.
But I had a guy I gave a lift to who stoke their lingo, they let me go, I said what the hell did you say to them, he said I just told him not to be so bloody stupid you don't have bloody radar.
So they drove off in there Lada.

Doug.

I have driven through the Balkans and generally Eastern Europe quite a bit, but not in my Beddie yet. Next trip planned to include Beddie!

I totally know what you mean about Serbian and Bulgarian road cops.. They're notorious, and getting worse all the time.

But I do have a question for you SLRasta, is your Beddie registered in the UK? If so, what do you do for insurance to drive through Serbia? I have not yet been able to find ANY insurer that would issue a Green Card for Serbia.. I have very many friends there and used to visit at pretty much every trip to the Balkans.. It seems like I would have to pay for insurance at the border now, which is a total rip-off..

Bulgaria and Romania are covered as they are part of the EU. But Serbia, Bosnia, Albania and Macedonia are not. Same with Ukraine, Belarus and Russia.. Have you found an insurer who covers these?

JimBeam, My van is registered in France and the Franch insurance covers every country in (geographical) Europe. I remember a while ago there was an insurance problem with serbia, but I believe that it is sorted out by now and I find it strange that UK insurers dont insure for theese countries. A tip: If you cant find an insurer ask a Turkish guy how they do, as they tend to travel frequently to Turkey by car and pass through Serbia.
