The 'Wanda' Blog

Going to start keeping you up to date on Boogie my newly aquired 1971 cf.
Gave her quick wash down today & removed the old wooden dashboard & shelf over cab so now its full height all along.
Discovered extra heater in back & loads of radio wire that i assume is from its original ambulance origins.
Had it running for some time & there doesnt seem to be any leaks or overheating & both heaters work.
Everything seems to work except for 1 side indicators, but doesnt seem to be hazards fitted.
Oil warning light flashes at tickover but no nasty noises except normal cf startup rattle.
Next job is to strip out rear totally & redo side panels & check floor.
Some welding to be done but i have got to learn how first lol.
Some pics to come when son gets home with camera.

Stripped all the old carpet in cab out today, virtually no rust, just needs good clean & rustproofing.
Unlike steps that both need welding at front.

Hi Mike - my steps went rusty because my windscreen was leaking and the water ran over the front arches, pooling in the step wells. I assume something similar is happening with yours

Thats probably cause of it Ed,screen rubber is quite bad.
Just changed cam cover gasket, all the nuts undid with my fingers lol,no spanner needed.
Spent ages getting oil pressure switch out, really was tight, then discovered that new one from ebay is wrong one....
Stripped complete interior out, most of it totally rotten from water ingress.
More pics later

Intermotor 5051 (50510) for oil pressure switch. Try your local motor factors.

Thread is 1/4"x 18NPTF (18 threads per inch, tapered National Pipe Thread Fine, 1/4" being nominal pipe bore for threaded fittings, not thread diameter).

Thew rubber washers under thee wiper spindles also create a direct line for water to the cab floor if perished- easy fix and a bit of captain tolleys creeping crack ure helps!

Marine ply suitably treated with preservative then bitumen paint should do the underside- i filled gaps round the edges with fillerfoam. If the old floor comes out in one piece you have a template- the orighinal freelander has battery access and gas bottle access in the floor (7.5kg bottle), might be worth looking at insulation as well?

Spent a couple of afternoons trying to get cotter pin out on steering rack coupling.
Wont budge, suspect that i am going to have to drop rack but that will have to wait as i cant lift it cos of bypass not healing properly.
Not in any hurry tho so it can wait lol.

Decided to rename her "wanda" after my old German Shepherd.

Now undecided what to do as the price of widow rubber seals is a bit much for me,usual story on pension/disability only!!
But have got some rather nice double glazed caravan windows that i could fit, fair bit of work needed as they are totally diferent sizes but better insulation etc.
So do i save up and stay original or go for modified windows.

Personally,I would go for modifying. My van wasn't "original" when I bought it & I've adapted it to suit me as well.Obviously the decision is yours but bear in mind the scarcity of parts if you do go original.

Hello Mike,
I would have to agree with Graham here, make it fit you; you're the one that's going to be living in it.
Here's a few photographs of my old van, all the materials were second hand & was built on a shoestring.

I did, actually, at one point contemplate blanking out the front two side windows but that was only because, when we're travelling, we have the bed made up permanently.
