Gearbox test bed.

Hi to all,

I have managed to pick up a couple of old Vauxhall/Bedford gearboxes with a view to rebuilding them, but instead of fitting them into a motor to test them I have built my own test bed so that the boxes can be checked out before I use them in a van, should be interesting, I will keep you all informed on my progress.

I was just thinking of something like that the other day, but on a slightly bigger scale: A full drivetrain testbed. Engine, gearbox, propshaft and axle.. I figured it wouldn't be hard to make, but my problem was that there's not enough space anywhere unless I decide to knock down a few walls in the house!

I will be following this with interest.

Space.

Hi JimBeam,

That has always been my problem, even when I had my own workshop I planned to have this setup for testing engines and gearboxes and setting up diff's.
And even then it was a space problem and never got done, now I have even less space, so I have built a smaller rig, powered by a smaller engine.
The rig is built and the small engine is mounted, I now have to work out the drive setup and mounts for the gearboxes to be locked into place.
I hope that with some adaption it can be made to take engine's as well, I did have one made up some years ago for engine's but scraped it when the workshop closed down.
The good thing about this smaller rig is that it can be taken apart quickly and stored away, and the hydrolic part of the setup can used for lifting.

Test rig.

Hi to all,

The gearbox test rig is up and working, at the moment the drive is through a rubber friction drive but I think I will change that with an old clutch centre plate.
This will transfer speed better and reduce friction heat, the gearbox tested has no selection problems or bearing noise.
The one that is at present in my old Bedshed certainly has a lot of bearing noise, so time to remove and strip down for new bearings, then test to check if cured.

A working rig.

Hi to all,

I am now able to run a gearbox up to speed and check sincro speed for clean changeing of gears, then slow the revs right down to check reverse engagement.
The use of a probe scope to listen to shaft and bearings at speeds up to 3000 rpm, so no need to have to fit a gearbox in the hope that all will be well.
The gearbox can be bought and put streight onto the rig, locked into place then ran up to speed for a complete checkover.

That would be good, always nice to have something to look at, especially as you've designed something, and you can show it of on here.

The rig goes multi-use.

Hi to all,

After the success of the gearbox testing rig I had another look at it and thought this could be modified to test alternators.
And so with a couple of bolt on brackets and a made up driveshaft I am now able to test my collection of spare alternators so that I know whats needing repaired and what is ready for use.
This will also let me check out any repair work before refitting the unit to the van.

Doug.
