A bit more storage.

Hi to all,

I don't know about you guy's but I am always looking for more storage space in my old Bedford, so I have cut out a piece of the side panel of each seat box.
And the stuff that I have managed to store in that space, like mains cables, jump leads, towing chains and spare belts, even a first aid kit, amazing!

Doug.

Hi Doug thats a good idea, pity we cannot access it by putting some sort of hinge on the seat so it just needed to be tilted forward, I know you would need a catch on it for MOT purpose but there is a lot of wasted storage under the seat boxes.

Dont know if it helps .....but only the back rest of a seat is mot testable , although where the seatbelts are mounted can alter this.

The whole of the seat is testable on an MOT for security not just the back.

Very interesting point Gethin. On my last CF I fitted Saab seats; no way were the original bases useable so I decided to make the bases out of wood. Glued and screwed, two or three good coats of black paint and, because of the nature of the seat and the fact that it was on runners, it could be pushed forward and the underseat could be used for storage. The point I'm coming to is that they were made of wood and very sturdy (and let's face it, most of your household furniture is made from wood). Would this have been an MOT failure?

It was constructed like the Forth Rail Bridge
The seat belt mounts, I used the original ones that came with the Bedford but this leads on to another question, by law, when do seat belts have to be fitted?

Hello Tim,
Not only do we have seats, we also have running water: unfortunately, it's normally down the window frames.

Both my front seats hinge forwards with no clips or locking device. But then my MOT tester is also my girlfriends dad...

Yes, lots of handy storage space, but the passenger side is full with van and leasure battery.

Hope you know he could be done for manslaughter if You got killed by the seats tilting forward..:B

He could be struck of the MOT as well as receiving a hefty fine for passing a Car/Van that fails the MOT..

Yes only the rear back rest of a seat is testable , they say "check the security of the seat" on drivers seat for obvious reasons, but any passenger seats only need a secure backrest . I did mots for years I quit because of stupid rules and regulations just like this seat issue, just like the rubber has to be on a brake pedal but not on a clutch pedal ?? Mots stand for nothing but like you say if something happens to the car the "tester" takes full responsibility!! A tester can get wrong for walking and checking around a car in the wrong order .... Eh?
Hence my career change ! Now I sell ice cream ... I can put the flake in any way I like, drizzle the sauce on any way I like and I dont have to sign anything ..... stress free........Until my cf's mot time that is

MOT and seats.

Hi guy's,

Its is a while since I did MOT tests as part of my working life, but both the back and the base of the seat had to have on movement except to slide back and forward or adjust in height.
And any excessive movement in these adjustments would have to be advised on the orange sheet.

Doug.
